I have a few horses who adore murdering troughs. They have to get buckets on the fence for turnout. I would love to get them a ‘kiddie’ type pool to play with in the summer heat. Any suggestions for a brand/model/type that might survive ? The standard rubbermaid ‘flat’ troughs are demolished in literally seconds.
I have several Tuff Stuff flexible LDPE troughs that can handle a big horse standing in them (ask me how I know). The 30-40gal ones I have are not big enough for all four feet or for multiple horses to play in at once, but they can take some abuse. It looks like they go up to 160? TSC has the 110gal, sides are under 2’ high.
Okay. What is ldpe ?
Low density polyethylene, it’s just a flexible plastic-y type material that is durable.
It may not survive super long, but the kiddie pools at my local lowes are like $8. And they are pretty bendy, so it may actually stand up to quite a bit of abuse.
I also have the Tuff Stuff LDPE troughs. I use them for hay nets, not water, but they withstand a lot of abuse. The material is super sturdy - I have a hard time thinking even multiple horses could destroy them. The Rubbermaid ones seem much more fragile.
If someone has the answer to this I am sure my barn owner would LOVE it if it kept my mare out of the trough! She will splash for hours and hours.
I have 2 that just flat out murder the Rubbermaid on sight. I am curious if the TSC are sturdier.
I have a bunch of these (same ones mentioned several times now). I don’t think they can be murdered. I only have the 40gal ones, no experience with the larger sizes TSC sells. But they bend instead of cracking and have seen many, many feet over the years.
