Any new tricks for preventing girth sores?

My 3 yr old keeps getting girth sores. He had one from our last ride so I gave him about 3 weeks off to heal up. Then went to ride him again this week and sure enough he has another one. I’m so disappointed. I only use a mohair girth. I stretch the shoulder before riding. What else can I try? He was really good the entire ride so I really didn’t expect him to have a sore.

Usually my go to solution for girth sores is to use a mohair girth. But that is not working in his case. My other mare will rub in anything else.

Real fleece. And keep it clean. I did notice that washing a fleece girth cover made it dissolve if you tried to put I back on the girth when it was wet. Not exactly sure what I did wrong.

I’ll need a bit more information before I can suggest any helpful solutions. Photos of your current setup would be really useful too.

One thing to keep in mind is that stretching the leg forward is no longer recommended.

Some factors to consider include billeting, whether the saddle is moving too much, if the girth is too short, the shape of the girth, girth material, and so on.

I used an Ovation Girth Sock when my horse was sored by a neoprene girth. I have learned some horses are allergic to neoprene. I used the sock while she was healing, and put gall salve over the sore first. It wasn’t a terrible sore (not bloody) just pink and raw. If it was worse she probably would have needed time off. Once it was 100% healed I started using an Ovation Air form girth. It’s not neoprene, but it is synthetic (soft PVC I think) and antimicrobial. Never had a problem since.

When my guy was 3yo he got girth galls because the saddle didn’t fit well enough. Had zero to do with the actual girth.
