any newbie opportunities in Colorado?

On the urging of a fellow Cother, I finally took the first step to getting involved in a hunt. I tried to email a few members on the contact pages I never heard back. I have a feeling that perhaps they were old contact info and may have not actually worked :frowning: Would anyone know if there any opportunities to get involved for a new person? I don’t think I would be able to ride for a while as I have no trailer to transport my two. When I graduate college I could get one, I think my two would love it.
My mare had hunted with a old owner and goes out just fine (with company or alone), jumps and we just love to gallop cross country. The new boy happily goes out too, if not better than his ā€œsisterā€. Both are in love with the barn dogs and prefer the ā€œpackā€ (only three mutts but both horses are careful and seem to think nothing of dogs trotting beside, under, running up on ect) to come along with them on trail rides! I ride hunter/jumper and am in weekly lessons to improve myself. I can’t wait to have the honor to ride with a formal hunt, but for now I would be happy just to be involved.

I would be very happy to volunteer or just watch, but I am not sure if that kind of opportunity exists? Anyone hunt out here that may know of anything like this?

In my experience all of the Colorado hunts are very welcoming of new members. For contact info, best bet might be to look up current info on the hunt’s entry at www.mfha.com. It could be the the contact info is current but whoever is supposed to respond is on vacation. It’s also about the time of year Arapahoe has their week of cubhunting and punching cattle in WY so there may just be nobody home! But I have hunted with Arapahoe, Bijou Springs and Fort Carson and you would be welcome at any of them, I’m sure. Arapahoe’s only attire requirements for those trying the sport are proper boots with heels and an ASTM helmet. I think the others are the same. Since transportation’s an issue, you can’t go wrong simply asking to car follow at Arapahoe, their country makes it easy to see a lot of the action. Fort Carson may not have car following at every fixture, just the paperwork to get the riders access to the base is complex I think! Bijou, the couple of fixtures I’m familiar with don’t lend themselves to car following I think, but they do have new country that may be better suited.

Bumping this up - I have transportation, and I would LOVE a newbie buddy! I’ve never been on a hunt myself and could use some guidance in figuring out how to get involved. PM if you want to try to set something up!!

Rhymes, I have recently contacted Araphoe about car hilltopping with them. It’s a chance to see how everythnig works before being on my horse in a new place. Maybe we can plan to go together?

I found the POC to be very freindly and helpful. PM me if you’d like. I am looking forward to hunting with my TBs.

Do the Colorado hunts account for their quarry? Is that the right way to say that? Basically, are the coyotes ever killed? Thanks for any answers.

Very rare to actually catch a coyote. Some hunts do, sometimes, but its damned hard.
Try Fort Carson Hunt near Colo. Springs. They are very welcoming. Email me directly (thru my website) for direct information for them.

Cindi I would love that!! Will send you a msg.

Ooooh, can I put my name on the list for cartopping with Arapahoe, too?
