Any recommendations for a hunt in Southern California for the horse-less?

Good people of COTH,

A lifelong dream of mine is to ride in a hunt after 17 years of H/J riding. Sadly I have never had the opportunity and my horse’s abilities aligned.

I am wondering if there is a place nearby in SoCal where I could purchase a day-lease and get to ride with the group. Most options I’ve searched don’t look promising this time of year or do not offer day-lease options.

Advice and recommendations appreciated!.

Well I don’t know anything about Southern CA, but generally hunting any live quarry stops right at the end of March. So you might want to look for fall. Have you tried getting in contact with a hunt and asking their masters if any of their members offer hired horses? Most hunts will have someone that offers this option, but it is rarely something the hunt would advertise.

Here is the map of recognized hunts: https://mfha.com/hunt-map According to the Santa Fe Hunt: Do you need to own a horse? Yes. However there are members of our club that may have more than one experienced foxhunting horse for lease. Contact Master Paine (951) 312-8704 at KingsWay Farm.

Thank you @pologirl27! This is very helpful.

I am truly a newbie, but that does makes sense that I might be missing the season here. I will give Master Paine a call,
