As we prepare to finally finish our new house project I’m starting a “clean out before we move” process – which includes my collection of 4 “used but all in good condition” dressage saddles. Brands are Schleese, Equipe, Albion, and Bates. I’d love to find a reputable consignment seller who can market and sell the saddles for me – I’m not interested in “top dollar” but rather finding a “new home” so the saddles are used rather than continue gathering dust in our guest room. FYI I’m located in Central Florida – north of Orlando and south of Ocala. If you have any suggestions let me know.
I just used Sam’s Saddlery and had a very good experience. She’s in PA, you’d have to ship to her but I wouldn’t hesitate to do that.
Pelham Saddlery.
Check out their website
Download their form.
Fill it out.
Take some photos.
Send the form back.
They will contact you if they will accept your saddle or not.
I find their terms reasonable.
They will detail your saddle for a fee if you request it.
There doesn’t seem to be a time limit for how long you can keep it there.
(And no, I dont any compensation for recommending them. )😉
I sold one through Pelham. It took a while, but I got a good price.
Another vote for Pelham, especially given that you want to get them sold–I’d swear some of the other consignment places are pricing high so they can have a nice inventory but never actually move saddles. I’ve dealt with Pelham as both consignor and shopper and liked both ends of it.
Pelham and Rick’s Heritage Saddlery both deal in a lot of used saddles. Skyland’s in NJ seems to have a smaller, but more high end inventory.
Saddle Manor (usedsaddles.com) used to be good, but is now out of business. Trumbull Mountain used to be good, but people have had a really hard time getting paid when their saddles sell.
I’ve had good experiences with Fine Used Saddles: https://www.fine-used-saddles.com/saddles/pc/home.asp
I sent a jump saddle to Pelham. It was there for 11 months with no interest. I lowered the price twice. I sold that same saddle through Aiken Tack Exchange in 2 months. I sold another jump saddle through Aiken Tack Exchange in 1 month. I bought a dressage saddle from Aiken Tack Exchange. Great to deal with.
A friend had a jump saddle with Rick’s Heritage, which is local to us. It finally sold after 2.5 years. Yes, years not months. She didn’t need the money and forgot about it.
Thanks for the suggestions. Will check them out.
Something to consider
If you have some local tack shops who do sell on consignment and you have more than one choice, go to a tack shop that specializes outside your discipline.
I had a dressage saddle I wanted to sell and had no luck at the local tack shop.
So we went on a road trip to Alpharetta Georgia where there is a highway that had five tack shops!
I took my saddle to the one that catered to the HunterJumper set and it sold in two weeks.
Or you might do a little research and see if there is a feed store that takes saddles on consignment . A friend of mine put her English saddle for sale in a feed store that also sold tack and someone bought it two days later.
There are a lot of QH people that enter in the English riding classes and might be interested .
I know a woman who bought a QH and took dressage lessons.
So look around your area and see if a Western tack shop might be interested. You never know until you ask.
Good Apple Equine Consignment here in Ocala. Great people. I was there yesterday and she was shipping out three saddles for trials. https://goodappleequine.com/
I bought my last saddle from Equus Now and it was a smooth deal. I am considering consigning with them to sell a few of my unused saddles.
Good Apple sells a ton and they are fairly close to you.
I just consigned one with Equus Now, very nice shop and they sent me a prepaid shipping label, they also took a pair of boots I wanted to sell too.
I third Equus Now
I’m going to give Good Apple in Ocala a try.
Aiken Tack Exchange
Also, Maryland Tack Exchange will buy certain brands of saddles outright. You may not get as much as you would consigning but you get it sold quickly at a fair price.
