any tailors (ammy or pro): patching breeches?

I have a great no-name pair of full seat breeches I love, but they have developed a few small holes in the fabric of the knee near the full-seat faux suede. The faux suede is sewn over the breeches, and if they were knee patch I would take off the kp, move it over an inch or so and sew it back on, but I don’t think that will work for the fs.

Is there a way to mend them or patch them or do I just ride in them until the holes grow to unbearable size and retire an otherwise perfectly great pair of breeches?

I don’t know. I had a pair of Kerrits tights which I absolutely loved. After wearing about 10 times, I developed holes in one knew and thought no problem - I’ll just patch. I asked the store if they had a problem with this and they said no and I probably snagged it. About 2 weeks later, the other knee got holes and then I discovered a hole in the seat. No more tights for me!

I’ve had a tailor patch underneath (on the skin side) of the holes, a large square patch that then allowed the hole to be sewn closed with minimal aesthetic changes. The square patch was only attached at the seams of the breeches, so wasn’t visible while wearing them. I’m not sure if my explanation made sense, but it did work for my breeches! Once they were patched, I’ve worn/washed/abused them for two years since.

When this sort of thing happens & your local shop is no help, talk to Kerrits - I suspect they would’ve sent you a replacement pair.

I don’t have a suggestion for the specific location of your tear, but since your title lured me in, and this might help others:

I have a pair of “equilibrium” (never was able to find the brand online ANYWHERE- these are at least 12 years old) breeches that I LOVE. They’re olive/tan and hold in my jiggle thighs and flatter my shape. I wore them so much (and for SO long) That the crotch wore a big hole. You couldn’t see it while I was standing or while I was riding, BUT obviously when there’s a hole in your crotch it makes riding a bit uncomfortable.

I gave them to my SO’s grandmother and begged her to fix them in time for an upcoming show. She couldn’t quite patch them or sew them back to the seam because the material is so stretchy. She had a light bulb moment. You know how many breeches have that inside pocket that we usually never use for anything because it’d be uncomfortable/too small? Well she removed that and it made the PERFECT patch. Same stretchy material as the rest of the breech, same color, so less obvious.

Just a friendly suggestion for those looking to patch an inconspicuous area with the same material as your breech (if they’re like mine!)

OneTwoThree - your SOs grandmother is a genius! I think I will try taking them to a tailor and see what they think…

I just had to share that tidbit because my narrow thinking mind would have NEVER thought of that!!! Good luck on a repair!!! I hate spending money on breeches when I see the kind of destruction I put them through!!!
