so, starting my rescue drafties on TC safe starch. One has shivers. They do get grass hay (from a few different places, so haen’t had it tested) and quite a bit of it. Both (at the moment, until their dental) have crummy teeth.
I have started them very slowly - they are getting about 1Q a day soaked in warm water. They love it. Not sure how fast to increase?
Just looking for ideas - will certainly run by vet so any feedback will NOT replace vet!
Switched my other guys to dynasty forage and they love it, seem to be dong well (in addition to hay, they don’t get much, but it ensures they get plenty of water!) Just too much sugar for the drafts.
I’m assuming you are talking about Safe Starch forage? One quart is essentially two bites for a draft.
What is your goal with it? I have fed it to my Cushings mare but switched to their grass forage (along with free choice hay but she is not a big eater at all). Both are under 10% NSC.
The Safe Starch is considered a complete feed if fed at the recommended amount (basically half a bag/day for a 1000lb horse).
well it might be alittle more than a Q, but yes, it is being increased NOT be their complete feed but in addition to their grass hay (considering getting an alfalfa mix for them, as one anyway could use the extra calories)
Just curious about the increasing schedule - I’am being very cautious with them. not totallu sure of their past diets - they were getting grain where they were but with the shivers I think that is being reconsidered. Has to be low starch high fat, I think.
I use it with my Quarter Horse mare- but not feeding the recommended amounts. I DO feed TC 30% with it.
My cushings pony with missing teeth lived on Safe Starch forage and TC senior for his last several years.
As far as a schedule for increasing it, I would think you can increase it relatively quickly since it is predominantly timothy or orchard grass hay. I don’t think you need to go as slowly as you would when adding a new grain.
I find I like Integrity Lite No Molasses for my easy keeper, even better than Triple Crown. https://www.integrityhorsefeed.com/lite.php
Increasing a new food by 1/2lb every 2-3 days is certain a safe conservative route for nearly every horse.
I switched from the Safe Starch Forage to Greenmeadow forage a couple of years ago. Similar product but IMO better quality.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! This exactly what I was hoping for!! GREAT!
I dont know an integrity dealer around here-not heard of Greenmeadow forage? Happy to consider all options but was really pleased with TC.
Im also grateful for the inrease schedule." So far, they’re doing fine and would like to keep them that way!
Really, thank you all SO MUCH!!!
