Any tips for watching cross country at the Jockey Club this weekend?

Hi all - I am tip-toeing over from hunter/jumper land. I am going to watch cross country at the Jockey Club in Ocala. A mare that I bred will be competing this weekend and I’d love to get some pics of her. Any tips on which jumps are best to watch. I have only been to one event and it was many years ago at Morven Park. Any other insider info appreciated! Thank you!

You can see a decent amount from the water that is by the clubhouse! It is such a great event - enjoy!

Great thank you! I can’t wait!

Definitely walk the course- it is beautiful! There is a long uphill (for Florida) climb, then a downhill run- perhaps you could get pics going up, then coming down. There is a nice Keyhole jump, too. They need volunteers if you want to do that one day. Sign up at eventingvolunteers.com

I’ll be competing in the CCI2-L, can’t wait! Keep an eye out for a tall spindly bay TB named Cthulhu.

Best advice for watching any XC course is start at the last fence and walk along the course backwards. Then you can see a horse do every fence (depending on division size) and you don’t miss any riders!

Thanks so much for the ideas! I will definitely keep an eye out for you Divine Comedy and Cthulhu.

This is how I usually do it… the only problem is if the horse you really want to see has a bad day and gets eliminated or retires before reaching you. Depending on the layout, when there’s a specific horse or rider I REALLY want to see, I find a good spot near the beginning and then try to get to another spot later in the course. The one year at Rolex there was one particular complex that was really taking them out early in the day. We were standing near the end of the course wondering if we would ever see a horse. We were also waiting at Head of the Lake to see the brother to my friend’s horse, and he retired before making it to us.

I am watching online, and looking for PD’s score on LongIsland T. For the life of me, I cannot find it!

I think that up near the clubhouse (water) you can see several jumps although some will be off at the distance. I am out there volunteering each day and am cheering for one that I bred too  (Prophet). Good luck to all of y’all and maybe I’ll see y’all out there!  (PS - I’m truly awful with putting names/faces/and internet friends together so seriously if I don’t say anything it is because I’m an idiot and just say hi! LOL)
