I am a little confused after reading the information on the sale. Are the carriages located in England? I can’t believe the starting buyer’s premium of 25%.

Yes, the whole auction is located in the UK.

Thanks Drive NJ for the notice, I had fun wandering thru the various items being offered. If this is the stuff to get rid of, what REALLY cool stuff are they keeping?? Just amazing the variety and quality in the scope of sale, clothing, dishes, accessories, carriages and furniture. Wonder if the old ancestors come to haunt you for selling off their stuff?

I have no clue what carriage things go for in the UK, especially with such history behind them. Just looked like they expect a lot for them. Thomas should be able to add to his collections, what a variety of whips and small things!!

Kind of sad to sell your neat old things, but maybe other folks will have plenty of fun playing with them instead of letting them sit around. I know we have WAY TOO MUCH horse stuff here!! And that is after about 20 years, not over 200 years of multiple persons putting their stuff in the attics!!!

Anyway, thanks for noticing and posting the catalog. I really enjoyed looking at all the great stuff.

The thinking is that with the Diana connection that most of the stuff will go to the US market.

Thomas
Did you get to the auction?
Did the carriages sell? To the American Market? or stay at home

Antiques really arent going very well on the local American market
So much different from whe we started driving
But then there are so many more new vehicles available now

WOW!

As anticipated the prices were astronomical. For absolutely everything that was sold. It was widely reported here immediately pre sale that the poor Earl made over £14 million just from the proceeds of 2 paintings !

When it came to the driving and riding stuff then it everything went for about 4/6 times the normal price.

Just the carriages and other stuff from the stables collection made a total of more than £2 million - that was double the catalogue high indicators.

One carriage made £132,250.

So no doubt he can now afford to get married again and father yet more little aristocrats! He is after all overdue for yet another new younger model wife!

blimey thomas- wish i had that kinda money lol

you mean more money than sense?

Or enough to attract a new younger model ?

Did the stuff end up in the US, as prdicted, or around the world? Or did it stay in recession worn UK? Guess only some people are feeling the pinch.

The sale realised a total of £21,076,288.

The carriages were mainly painted in matching Spencer livery of dark green and black with maroon undercarriages.

They’ve been in store and not on public display for some time so aren’t exactly some great loss to a nation!

The state vehicle estimated to make between £50 and £80,000 went to a UK private buyer and for a staggering £133,250.

Other carriages also went considerably over the estimates (doubling them at least) The majority to private buyers and believed to be overseas.

A couple of barouches went for over £50,000

A coach for £91,250

A wagonette for £30,000

An open top tandem cart for £30,000

A hooded phaeton for £30,000

What recession ??? !!!

These people obviously have no shortage of closet space.

I discovered where the lovely owen side saddle I was eyeballing (pg 146) ended up: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Owen-Side-Saddle-previously-owned-Lady-Dianas-family-/270614804739?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item3f01e63903
