Any updated rain gear advice?

I’ve looked back at past threads, but haven’t seen anything recently - are there any new products for riding in the rain? Specifically rain pants that can go over boots and breeches? The usual Grand Prix ones run super small, so they won’t fit my sz 34 butt. :frowning:

I’ve been looking for a good product for several years now, but haven’t been able to find something super convenient. I’m always surprised since so much of us have to ride in the rain at some point. And with all these hurricane remnants coming through every weekend, hoping to find a good jacket and pants to stay dry.

Would love any recommendations! TIA

There used to be rain chaps I think outback leather had them. Most people just get a waterproof rain coat that covers their thigjs. There are some wax jackets that cover more of your legs but look like they can be
cumbersome

I just picked this up from Dover; the one with the pattern is on a nice sale. https://www.doversaddlery.com/horseware-hwh2o-poncho/p/Z1-400408A/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw2or8BRCNARIsAC_ppyaUZgHIEyhFE4BDpxWHpA5knb8sYm97gm3mfKnNfklUWeKCnB3c0qUaAvk8EALw_wcB

I’ve not yet rode in the rain with it, but it will def keep my thighs covered. I wore it last night out on the patio as it was sprinkling and I really like it!

Horseware also does a few kinds of rain pants for riding:

I ride my bike to the barn, ride, and bike back again and from September - May this usually happens in the rain. I upped my raingear plan this year and am pretty waterproof with:

Decathlon waterproof breeches: https://www.decathlon.com/collections/horse-rider-gear/products/womens-horse-riding-waterproof-warm-and-breathable-jodhpurs-kipwarm?

Waterproof jacket from Decathlon (bonus reflection strips for my bike ride home at night): https://www.decathlon.com/collections/horse-rider-gear/products/horseback-riding-warm-waterproof-jacket-500?

The jacket is great too because it has a high neck so no water can drip in through the neck (there’s also a packable hood).

Cheap tall leather boots are my go-to in the rain too - no water soaking through the ankle boots and half chaps.

I have also had the Mac-in-a-pack pull on pants on my list to try, though I’m not sure if you can ride in them: https://www.amazon.com/Mac-Sac-Unisex-Waterproof-Packable/dp/B07C9X17TW

And I have two light rain jackets - one stays in my bag for spontaneous showers and one for cooler weather. However I had to spray them with waterproof spray as they lost some waterproofing qualities after a few trips in the laundry.

I also dream of a wide-brim helmet for full waterproofing powers!

I have these on the way too for the winter! https://kerrits.com/products/sit-tight-windpro-kneepatch?variant=31665492754490

They are not waterproof but are suppose to be wind and water resistant. Hope was that with something like the HWH20 overtop winter layers, plus those breeches, I should be in decent shape to hit trails in light precipitation. I also got the HW quarter sheet which is waterproof as well. Again, have not tested it in any elements yet but it seems like it will be good.

I started a separate thread about these yesterday, after my first big autumn ride in the rain! I thought they would go well with my rain coats. I have an Outback Outfitters “goretex” ankle length coat, great but it blows back off my thighs at canter even with the leg straps on. And I have one of those cute flared Asmar riders raincoats that’s wonderful but doesn’t quite cover my knees. I thought these would work great to cover the front of my leg. Thoughts?

I have a pair of Tally Ho rain pants, they work well and maybe have more sizing options? Also, Samshield seems to make a pair of waterproof breeches I’m interested to try out. I do love the Asmar rain jackets, they have the best fit and the extra zippers help give a little extra room where you need it while riding.

I just ordered a pair. Shipping was only $4.66 from Holland. I did do a search here on Rainlegs and found a few positive comments. I am another one whose size was not compatible with the GrandPrix ones. These look safer anyhow…

Oh do give us a review when they arrive!

I COVET THESE. They are sold out in my size but I’m bookmarking this site! Thank you for the recommendation. How is the fit- can you compare them to any other brands? I have wide hips and strong thighs so breeches that suit a willowy figure don’t generally work for me, for instance.

I swear I do not work for Decathlon but I have loved everything I’ve gotten from them (which is pretty much 90% of my gear so I can’t really compare to any other brands). These breeches would probably fit you perfectly - I’m tall and lean and they are a little too big in the butt and thighs for me. I bought a medium because my other Fouganza breeches ran small so I had to size up, but these tend to run pretty true to size.

Bonus is they stick you to the saddle so no slipping around

How warm are these? Most of the time when it’s raining here it’s in the 50s/60s, so I don’t want to sweat to death at the same time…

I don’t think the Rainlegs interest me that much, just because I’m not fond of the idea of a wet butt.

I’m really surprised there aren’t more flexible options out there - I mean, riding and showing in the rain is a thing, I saw Ariat used to make rain pants, but not anymore…interested to hear these recommendations - keep them coming!

I was interested in the Rainlegs to supplement my flared Asmar riding raincoat which doesn’t quite cover my knees but otherwise flares out over the saddle beautifully. I agree, the Rainlegs would not be enough with a waist length jacket.

It’s the same temperatures here and they’re not too warm by any means. I wouldn’t wear them in the summer though. I haven’t been able to find any waterproof breeches that weren’t for cold weather too.

My butt does not get wet with my raincoat so I think the rain legs should be ok. Noting that said raincoat is longer than waist length.

Don’t have any of their products myself but Redingote seems to be an interesting up and coming company that makes rain/winter riding gear meant to go over riding clothes… have heard others rave about their stuff.

Are the jumpsuits meant to be used while riding? I wouldn’t think that would be super comfortable unless it was a perfect fit, but they look comfy!
