Anybody know this brand?

This link is supposed to be open to all.

I got this pony, Buddy, a few years ago and don’t have a whole lot of history on him. I would like to know if anybody recognizes his brand and could maybe give some clues to his background. Even if its just general information on the brand/ranch he came from.

He is old… mid to late 20’s is the best guess. He is a flea bitten grey, 14.2 hands high, and have been told that he was a quarter/arab cross.

He is my foxhunting pony. Lots of heart and have yet to find the bottom of his gas tank.

I originally bought him for my son as his only vice was being a bit forward (No bite, kick, rear, or buck wonderful ground manners and great alone or in company). I had to retire my hunt horse and started riding “Buddy”. We are now entering our 4th season together.

TIA

Can’t say with certainty, but a few months back there was a horse run through an auction with a brand like this. A lot of people were saying that it was the “Circle J” brand.

No idea what that means, as I’m clueless when it comes to the ranch branding thing, but at any rate I hope it helps in some way! Good luck in uncovering more about your boy! He looks like a sweetie

Don’t know the brand and it is a neat brand, not half smeared as some geldings from Mexico have.
He looks just like those mexican horses we get around here, that make very nice, gentle and tough horses.
A neighbor had one just like your horse, same head and body proportions.
He was a bay and was priceless for his family.
Anyone could make a hand on him, he had such a good mind.

Thanks for the info.

The brand is very clear. I’d call it a Circle J brand if I had to describe it.

I’ll see if I can do a search for Circle J brand. Any ideas on the best places to search for such things?

He is an absolute sweety.

He is bold, but careful…He’s game to try, but won’t kill himself to do it. Example. We were out fox hunting and on a line when one of the staff passed the field to get ahead, but her horse refused the coop. Apparently the last time they had hunted that fixture, it had been really trappy on the opposite side of the coop and her horse was having no parts of it. The Field Masters horse wasn’t to keen to jump after seeing the other horse refuse 3 times. Master jumps, then its our turn…He canters softly to the jump, slows to get a good look at what all the fuss was about and jumps once he has deemed it safe. He can easily jump a 3’ fence from a walk (Not that this is the way I like to do it).

I believe he has worked cows some. Out fox hunting we had to go through a pasture of some VERY CURIOUS dairy cows. He was not at all bothered at keeping the entire herd back while the rest of the field exited through the gate. Wouldn’t you know, that blame fox ran through that field several times that day. Probably snickering the whole time.

I’ll see if I can do a search for Circle J brand. Any ideas on the best places to search for such things?

I tried to do a quick Google search on it, but there seem to be several "Circle J"s, as well as some… other unrelated things that I didn’t need to see.

Hopefully someone from the western world will chime in on this thread and be able to direct you better.

When it came to the auction horse, everyone was talking like it was THE “Circle J” (ranch?), so I’m sure someone with that level of knowledge will be able to pinpoint it for you right away.

Doing a search has been frustrating as the brands are registered by state, not federally, and not all states have a web based way to search…

In TX brands are registered by counties, even more frustrating.

You could put an ad for a couple of weeks with that picture of the brand in this magazine, the real magazine, not the internet one:

http://www.livestockweekly.com/classified/horses.asp

I know of others that have done so and if the brand really is from a western ranch, they did find who knew about it.

Livestock Weekly is a newspaper that everyone in the cattle business gets every week.

Bluey- Thanks so much for helping. I’ve just sent an email inquiring about the cost to run the add for a few weeks.

Is there any where else I could post the question? A more western leaning bulletin board?

Lots of western folks on this one:

Thanks MunchkinsMom, I have posted under the general section and under the Western section. Hopefully I’ll get an answer.

This one might even be better, since their target audience is ranchers:

I’ve joined and posted on the western horseman forum as well.

I have a few views on the horsecity site, but no replies.

Thanks so much for all the help.

update us if you find the answer please!!

I’d say it’s Circle J as well… do you know where he came from? That may narrow down the search…

The people I bought him from are from Central Va as well. They used to board him at the same barn I at many years ago. The young girl (10 at the time) used him for trail riding and eventing. As she got older she got a young TB mare to event, so he sat in a pasture for 3 years. She rode him for 3-4 years before he became a pasture puff.

I don’t know who owned him before the young girl, but I was told he was used as a barrel pony by a young boy, but he was too hot.

I don’t know where he was from, his breed, nor his true age. I only know that he hasn’t been lame or sick in almost 12 years.

I haven’t found anything that would let me know where he’s from.

I have in front of me a current list of registered brands in VA. (We’re considering registering one). There is no Circle J on the list. The closest thing I can find is a Circle cursive L.

So…one state down. Good luck.

Yeah!! Only 49 more to go!!

Bump.

Late to the party

Hey there – I’m probably years too late to contribute, but I just adopted a foal with this same brand. Wondering what ranch he came from. I was told it could be somewhere in New Mexico, but their registry doesn’t seem to list one… did you ever find information on it?

If it helps, he supposedly came from a large operation. He’s a ranch-bred grade Quarter Horse, just a couple months old, cremello. He’s also got a circle over a Z on his right shoulder. Thanks!

In NM all brands are registered and you can’t move a horse or cattle without a brand inspection.

Try contacting the NM brand inspector’s office about this?
