Anyone a Goldfish Expert?

Steve, Fishy was about 3 inches long.

Geez, I hope your dog does better than the fish!

If nothing else works, take the alchohol that was recommended in an earlier reply, pour over the ice (also previously mentioned). Drink down
leisurly, then add a little garlic butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add one goldfish. Enjoy with a chardonnay wine. Then
you can keep him with you a little longer.

God! I am so sorry!!! I just couldn’t help myself! I really am sorry about your pet. I too,
had fish and worried about them. Please update us on your fish’s health. (I myself, catch crickets that are in the house, and will put them outside rather than kill them…ditto for spiders).

Maybe it’s a problem with his swim bladder-unfortunately I have no idea how to treat it! Do you add a bit of salt to his water? That always makes goldfish feel better.

I do know that flushing him would be a fairly long, painful death. The best way to euthanize a fishy is to put him in a bowl of ice water, it’s very quick and painless.

I hope it doesn’t come to that, good luck with the little guy.

I remember reading many moons ago that a good, humane way of euthanizing goldfish was to put them in a smaller bowl (with water)and place that in the freezer.

I had a huge Koi that was atleast 12" long when he died last year, our house sitter dumped the whold container of food in the pond and it femented or went bad and killed all the Koi!!!
The 5 cent goldfish live on.
Anyways, I suggest using tetracylcline in water and soak him in a seperate solution of it.
Although that is what I used for ick which seemed to appear as the weather would change, thus changing the water temp.
The sideways floaters are normally a hard one to help.
One year one froze solid in the pond, I chopped it out and thawed him out and he came back to life!!! A bit of freezer burn on his upper fins though.
Good luck.

That shocked me… how is Tin going to take it?

salt makes them feel better? I have a small tank, how much would I add? Worth a try!

I didn’t think flushing would be nice and I’d rather not have it come to me ending my poor fishs life. Thanks for the info!~

Quinn - I gave my rabbit CPR, but I was not so successful in bringing her back.

Heelsdown - I am imagining a fisherman’s dilemma - drink the Vodka or pour it on the fish…Hmmmm…

Bumpkin…I’m interested to know how you handled the housesitter situation. Did you reem her out, withhold her pay? I have had many problems with house sitters. Hope this one i have coming on friday will work out without any glitches! (hardy har har)

And, chipping him out and thawing him? Well, honey, you are a genuine life saver!! Move aside, Dr. Bumpkin coming thru!! WOW!!

I was just kidding!!! It’s a joke!!! I really do like fish!!! Please don’t turn me in to PETA!

The only thing I’m an expert at regarding Goldfish, is finding them floating in the top of the fishbowl. Sorry!

And I thought my sister was nuts to take her parakeet to the vet to be euthanized. I had never considered what to do with a sick goldfish.

But I do recall a tale of a small child I knew years ago. When I asked what had become of his goldfish, he promptly answered, “I got tired of them so I flushed them down the toilet.” I said, “WHAT???” He then informed me it was ok because they would live down there. I didn’t have the heart to tell him otherwise, that is until he was about 15 or so.

I hope your fishy is better, or goes quickly, what ever is “humane” in the world of fish.

THe most humane way to put a fish out of his misery is to freeze him. I know it sounds cruel, but really, they just go to sleep. It’s totally painless.

Mine have been swimming and growing for five years now. Does that make me an expert? Or unbelievably lucky? You could try a product besides ICK, one of the general de-stressers, there are a few out there… I think mine is a purple water treatment. Remember to remove the charcoal filter, cos it will just remove the product from the water. Fresh water also seems to help with lethargy. I have had a few that insisted on becomming this way when I was a kid, and better aeration has helped. I woulnd’t flush him till I tried everything I could. Even then I couldn’t see flushing him, or the cold water. (Does that really work? I don’t think so. Mine were living under a 4 inch layer of ice, goldfishies love the cold and usually adapt quickly to a quick drop in temp. They stop swimming till their bodies adapt. But tell me if it really does work in case I ever need it some day).

My horsie is awesome!!!

Hobson… 15 years? Really? I had no idea fish could live that long! Wow!

Well Mo I have to admit I am such a wussy, I never told her.

She could not have afforded the cost to replace this fish I had for ten years, and we did not realize what had killed all my Koi until we cleaned the pond out and found the icky rotted lumps of food at the bottom.

Bumpkin, you are on a roll!!! That is too funny!!
