Anyone a Goldfish Expert?

Sorry it’s not horse related Erin but I think my gold fish is dying

My beloved Teffler, whom I purchased a year ago when I locked my keys in my car at the shopping mall and was waiting for a spare set is sick. He’s been kind of swimming on his side for the last 3 weeks and doesn’t move much. I can’t even turn the filter on because he gets sucked into the the sucky thing (kind of funny, but really sad). I’ve been treating him for Ick with no results and now he’s pretty much completly sideways and isn’t hungry.

Does anyone know whats wrong with my poor fish?

And my last question is, if I flush my beloved Teffler will he die instanly and painlessly or will it be slow and painfull. Yes I must admit I have thoughts of ending his life so he doesn’t suffer anymore.

LMAO!!! Too funny jetsmom!

I was wondering before actually, if I put my fish in a glass of tequilla to end it all and let him sit for a few months, would he turn out like the nice helucinigenic worms?

Anyone want to try?

My mom’s goldfish recently died at 15 years old. He too had difficulty swimming around during his final year, and my mom helped him survive by giving him “physical therapy.” I am not kidding. She’d stick her hand into the tank, grab Fishy, and glide him around in the water for 5 or 10 minutes a day, to help oxygenate the gills. Fishy submitted willingly to the procedure, sitting peacefully in my mom’s hand, and he’d always perk up after his “sessions.” But alas, one morning she found him…afloat. “It was all so sudden!” she said, sadly.

Yup, that wasn’t a typo - Fishy lived a long, and we hope happy, 15 years. He is buried in my parents’ back yard with the rest of the deceased pets.

Oh, my
Have you ever hired her back again?

Are very sensitive delicate fish, and they arent’t goldfish. The big breeders have reported koi of over 35 years old.

BossHoss~ I’ve removed the charcol filter when I started treatment but can’t even put the filter on now of he just gets sucked into ithe tube and there he’s sit until I unplug it. I’ve tried the stress-coat thing and have another “medicine” I was trying with no success either.
I noticed that he does have a little white dot on his head but nothing else is wrong with him.
I will try some salt and treat him againand see what happens

Hobson you made me want to go out and get a goldfish! I had no idea they could make such nice pets.

No matter how rough things are, it could always be worse!

Only if we are home.
Like if Mallory and I have to go to a horse show early, and need her to come put my dogs out at a more decent hour than 5 a.m.
And Mr Bumpkin is home to make certain they are out and not still locked up.

She was good with my JRT’s, never any fights or dogs in the wrong paddocks.
My guess is her younger sister did the fish pond.

Clever subject huh?

Actually, I have been doing quite a bit of research into Koi because I want to add 4 18" ones to my farm pond. I live in Southwestern Ontario so our winters are quite cold. I have been told that Koi will survive even better than my goldfish do because they tend to be very tough. As long as your pond is deep enough, they will hibernate at the bottom and resurface in the spring. Their lifespan is anywhere from 40 to 60 years.

Oh Hobson, I love your mother. She would probably like to know I gave a mouse CPR once. I had purchased a “humane mouse trap” which is a plastic cylinder that is spring loaded. I didn’t read the instructions though and didn’t realize you needed to drill breathing holes in the end of the stupid thing. By the time I got to the mouse in the morning, he was soaked with sweat, his eyes were glazed and he was breathing his last. I held him in my hand and put my face as close to his as I could and breathed on him. He came to quite nicely and I let him go outside.

In retrospect, he probably beat me back into the house.

hobson, was it a big gold fish or a little on? IU had a little one and it died in 2 days, so i got to get a new one because they are supposed to live for at least 3 days so i got a new one! i had that one for 2 months then it died so i got a dogg

Tin, how’s your fishy?

My mom has some outgrown fish she every once and a while tries to find good homes for. Let me know if you are serious, and have a pond conditioned for fishies, and I’ll ask my mom to give you one (if she has one available). She is a big big softie and needs them to go to good homes!
Their pond is just too small (in Oakridge!!) for the size hers want to grow, especially as she likes to overwinter them inside in a tank. She has a variety of types. You can email (my addy is listed here) when you are ready for one

My horsie is awesome!!!

You can use 2 teaspoons of non-iodized salt per gallon, I’d do a water change first. Or you can get salt pellets from the pet store and place them in a plastic cup on the bottom of the tank. It helps put minerals back into the water, especially after the ick treatment killed off all the beneficial flora (probios for fish?).

To make this horse related, sometimes the swim bladder is affected by an impaction of fish food. So maybe your guy is colicking??? Try fasting him (perhaps he’s already doing this himself), or feeding a couple of peas-the fiber will help move stuff through his teeny system.

Bosshoss-duh! I guess I wasn’t thinking straight, the ice water treatment probably wouldn’t work on cold loving carp! Perhaps the other extreme-microwave? Sorry, that was terrible of me!

You guys are scaring me! I got a goldfish at the rodeo (about a month or 2 ago?)…somehow I thought they would die after a month or so. But mines still alive and swimming.

OK now y’all are going to come get me for being a goldfish-hater aren’t y’all?

Thanks for asking, but no improvement I’ve tried everything but the salt and will try that tonight. Fingers crossed!

BossHoss, I have just e-mailed you. I would love to have your mum’s “too big for the pond” fish.

If you must I’d suggest pouring a little vodka or gin over him, into his gills. It works very, very quickly. It is my preferred method when fishing for big fish, no blood and a swift death.
