Anyone been to the Perry (GA) Draft/Carriage Sale?

Has anyone been there? What do they ussually have at the Sale ? But I’m thinking about going to the next sale ,and I was just wondering what do they have besides horses .

Everything… You need to be more specific in what you are looking for. If you are wanting marathon vehicles and CDE type harness, you might see one or two… Otherwise it’s got tons of Amish made pleasure And work harness and every kind of pleasure and commercial vehicle with antiques and mini wagons thrown in. The website will post some pics before the sale if people send in pics, but this is not even an eighth if what you will see at the sale.

I went last year, it was great! They had stagecoaches, & hearses, meadowbrooks and everything in between.

I haven’t been there in a couple of years - but it is so much fun:)
Usually Thursday is the Haflinger Auction and watching them selling the Draft Horses and Mules is fun as well…
They also had Farm-Entry-Gates (really cheap) with beautiful motives, all kinds of tack, cast iron cookware (most of it already seasoned:D), tools and so much more!
If you have the opportunity to go - it is a great experience!

Oh , I was just wondering what they had there . But I was also wanting to get my large pony gelding a good harness . He’s just in training right now .

Awesome pics pnalley!

When is the next sale?

I don’t even know when the next sale is. i want to go back, I really enjoyed it!

You can get a good harness there, but know that it will most likely have an overcheck/side check and no noseband. Most the harnesses that go through are your lighter pleasure harness/work harness. You probably won’t see much wide/well padded breast collars or breeching, or the Y shaped breast collars. A lot of it will be silver studded parade/work tack. I did buy my mini a biothane harness there at their spring auction last year, used it roughly 6 months and upgraded to one better suited for his build and CDE work. There are vendors there, I bought from a vendor, hauled my pony there, and had it fit to him on site. I recommend that! Sizes are not always well marked.

However, I MUCH prefer my country carriages bio harnesses with the super V breast collars and shaped crowns. Most likely you won’t find that at the perry sale.

You missed their spring sale. There will be a fall sale. Check their website for the date. Google southern GA carriage auction.

It is worth the trip. I really enjoyed the hearses for some reason.

Pnalley - I love the horse part… Last i went i bid on 5 of them!!! One i wanted bad and bid her up to the highest of the sale, but had to stop or fear the wrath of my husband… Then i was just plain mad and kept bidding on some others. Any i would have been happy to bring home, but i kept getting out bid anyway! I made the auctioneers happy for bidding the prices up i guess! There was a hafflinger that i wouldnt have glanced at until the amish girl riding him really made him move out and my jaw dropped… But he went high than i was willing to pay that day, hindsight, when the owner PO’d the sale and found me later asking if i would pay $200 more, i really wish i would have said yes… It was a FABULOUS moving haffie with a pretty good temperament too. Oh well!

I’ve told myself i cant go back on the horse days! There is also a draft/carriage auction in Modoc SC once a year. A friend of mine goes to that one. It’s smaller, but she likes that one. I’ve never been to it. I’ve been to a couple of their horse auctions. Still wishing i would have won a driving mini at one i went to a couple years ago… But again, i have to refrain from horse auctions, i cant seem to restrain myself from bidding… Since i board now, new horses are just NOT an option!

I did really enjoy seeing all the carriages. There was an antique mini carriage i kinda wish i had won, but it was dinky, as in i would have had to loose 80lbs to fit in it! But very cool! And a vis a vis that was GORGEOUS in green and natural oak. Cant say i have any need for a vis a vis though! I have bought a couple carts from Perry though!

I saw a little Paso Mare on day 1, I went back on day 2 to be sure she sold for more than slaughter prices. She did bring about $50 more than what I had figured to pay as I don’t need another horse, The buyer was so excited, I hope she wound up in a good place. There was a little B&W pinto mini I would have loved to have had. He was broke to drive and really carried himself well. I left before he came up. They had some pretty mules that a friend of mine bought. Most of the horses were in really good shape, and seemed to go for really good prices. One draft had the worst feet I have ever seen, I am pretty sure he had a 1 way trip up north.

I’d love to go to the fall auction. It was a cheap way to spend the day. Do eat before you go as their food is horrible and expensive

The next is Nov 9-11. Schedule:

It looks wonderful! I think I just might go too!

I was kinda impressed when i went that i didnt notice kill buyers. I’m sure they might be there, but for the most part, the owners would PO the sale if it didnt go high enough. I seemed to be the only one bidding on multiple horses that day, and at prices high enough that i for sure wasnt a kill buyer!!!

I’ve always been impressed with most the horses there, in good flesh and seem cared for. It’s not your typical local auction. A lot of the Hafflingers get hauled there from out of state. The mare i really wanted the last time i went, her owner hauled her in from the New Orleans area.

Sl![](ghtly ot but thought since this is about the Perry Sale I would ask:
I am looking for a pair of ponies that I would like to buy back or find their whereabouts. They were sold at the Perry sale in GA in Nov. 2010. Any help will be greatly appreciated. They are 12H black with 4 whites. One is a little shorter than the other.Their names at the time were HipHop and Dancer. They were sold to a family in North GA. Please call or email me if you can locate them or know who bought them. Thanks for all help. Art 352-875-1928

Look thru the link I provided to see if they were there. Otherwise see if you can get a sale sheet with their hip numbers. Possibly the auctioneer could help track them down that way. I know when I got a bidders number they took my address, phone number etc.

Thanks pnalley. I checked your pics but they are not there. Also emailed Perry sale and asked them. No response yet. Just hoping by chance someone will recognize them. Posted on GA craigslist and GA4sale. Forgot to say they are both mares. I really appreciate your info.

Sunce he is only a 2 yr old , I’m just looking for something for him to get used to the straps on him . And then I think I may sell that one(if I find one) and adding that money to get a him a really good one .

Plus since he is 13hh right now and only a 2 yr old that I’d let he fill out more . But I just need one for ground work .

We might go to the SC Sale too . I would love to get a Mini that is broke to drive !

Do know that i bought my Perry bio harness for $325… I was only able to sell it for $100 including shipping. I started that mini with a nylon harness i paid $75 for and gave away when i bought the Perry harness for him. Hindsight, i would have MUCH rather bought his current country carriages harness for him and saved my money.

I did the same with my cob mare, but more expensive… I went with a used nice bio harness from Carriage House, but had a straight breast collar. I started her in that one, and it was fine but i wanted a cut back crown and a shaped breast collar for her. Sold it for the same i paid for it. However, i was able to get a Hunts harness for a song. But it didnt end up fitting her right either. Sold it for more than i paid for it. Bought her a new Country Carriages harness that fits her perfect.

The moral of this story… If you are going to buy something you are thinking you’ll sell later… Buy a used GOOD quality harness that will re-sell well. Or get what you want to last you forever. He may be 2 and 13h, but i’m willing to bet a cob size harness will probably fit him forever if that’s the case. You might need a couple smaller pieces for right now if he’s narrow or gangly. Which might be the case when you buy from Perry, you might need a pony and a cob size to put together for him. But for the most part, they are very adjustable and holes can be added to go smaller.

The Perry sale usually has a good assortment of minis. I LOVE driving mine! He’s a blast! If i didnt board, i would probably have a good size herd of them! They are addicting! Search through here:

You can get a good deal on some driving minis/shetlands on there. Lots of breeders/show barns cutting back and such.

In Pnalley’s pics is a pic of a pink metal cart. Perry sale has a lot of these in mini size. I bought one there in kelly green. It held up well for me, i couldnt kill it and i put it over some rough trails. So if you go the mini route, that can be a cheap option. I didnt keep it, paid $325 for it, sold it for $150, i upgraded to something a little nicer to show with, that i hate and will upgrade again to a pacific smart cart as soon as i can afford it!

Moral of that story, just get what you want to begin with cause buying and selling all this crap to one day get what you want… You lose money and it’s the pits!

Thank you ButlerFamilyZoo ! I’ll just do that ,and go ahead and get a good harness to begin with . I’m thinking about getting a Beta Biothane harness ,because I just hate cleaning leather . But I love the look of it .

OMG! I saw your mini in another thread and he is soooo adorable !!!

I had a small shetlland pony ,but he was NOT driving pony ! lol He was just to spooky .

If it was up to me ,I’d have a slue of ‘em ! lol I really like the Minis in the 34’’-38’’ size range .lol But maybe in the near future I can get me a good little driving mini . Papers are a plus in my eyes ,but as long as it’s a good one ,I’m sold .lol And my 2 yr old (Charger) needs a playmate .lol My mares hate him .

Okay this is off topic ,but it comes into the harness .

So since I’m only 15yr old .I need to find ways to make money . Right now me and my Aunt are thinking of making english saddle pads , hoods(like sleezy sleep wear for horses) ,coolers , full body slink (SS wear for horses) ,tail & mane bags ,and other things . Oh also with embroidery and I have some tack I could sale . Any other ideas ?
