Anyone breed full sisters to same stallion?

I was discussing this with a friend the other day. I know I have heard of a few small breeders doing this (with much desired results) but wondering about the breeding community as a whole. How many of you out there have taken full sisters, three quarter or half, heck even a mother/daughter, and bred them to the same stallion? Were the resulting foals the type you wanted? Did you see any similarities or traits that you know came from the dam passed on in both?

When you have a set of sisters that come from such a consistent family it would almost be a no brainer to breed them the same. What would work well for one would work well for the other, no? I fully understand what breeding to different stallions would accomplish but and am interested in what breeding the same offers. With the programs I am seeing doing this, you can just tell from the resulting foals that this system WORKS, but I’ll wait for them to chime in.

Telling your story would be nice, pictures would be even better!

I’ve bred Phaedra (Pik Solo) and her mother Faunja ( First Class) to Bravo for several years in a row and the results have been very consistent! Site champion and premiums every year both with GOV and ISR/OLD NA.

Show winning offspring consistently from both Faunja and Phaedra by Bravo!

I bred a Mother and Daughter to Flemmingh, and got two totally different types. Both nice, but very different from each other.

I bred a mother and daughter to Sir Wanabi, unfortunately lost one at delivery so cannot compare this year, but keeping my fingers crossed for 2012 since that mare has been checked in foal at 14 days… I loved the type of the daughters’ filly, and I suspect offspring of the mother will be similar (but can’t prove it for now!)

Here are two full-brothers in blood: Condios x Ekstein x Landino x Voltaire.

I just aquired the dam of one of my mares and I plan on using the same stallion with her. My mare takes after her dam and I’m hoping for similar results using her dam while I ride the daughter

Two full sisters have been bred to our Alvesta Picasso for many years. I have found them all very similar in type, movement, etc. Hard to compare photos though when the two youngsters out of the one mare haven’t quite grown up yet

Daventry - were your full sisters very similar in type as well to start with or were they totally different?

Lovely youngsters - you seem to have found a really strong and favorable “niche” with those breedings!

Purchasing two weanling fillies that will be here this fall…same sire. Dams are sired by the same stallion (not the one that sired the fillies) and out of mares that are full blood sisters…so second generation of same genetics. Fillies are very very similar in looks in photos and videos…haven’t seen in person yet. Breeder tells me they are a bit different personality wise with one a bit bolder/more outgoing than the other. Both reining bred and double bred Hollywood Dun It. One red dun, the other a dunskin.

I bred two half sisters to Wolkentanz II last year and got two really nice fillies. The dam’s are not very similiar (though they share the same strengths and weaknesses). Both are heavily linebred on Absatz (mother of both mares is Arkansas/Akzent II) and from a very successful Hanoverian damline. Wolkentanz himself is also linebred on Absatz, so it was an interesting breeding for me.

Both fillies are quite typey, both have pretty heads, big eyes and big trots (they are the best movers we have ever bred…probably even better than the really good Quaterback colt we had a few years back). Both have better shoulders than their dams (this is a weakness in the damline) and both have super good hind ends (strengths in my mares)…very quick, well put together, lots of sit.

I also bred a mother and daughter to Sir Wanabi this year for 2012. The same mares (Faunja and Phaedra) that I bred to Bravo in previous years. I’m very excited about the breedings and can’t wait to see what I get.

Sorry for your loss and good luck with the breeding this year!

Yes, both mares are very similar in type, bone, etc.

I bred my leased mare Isabeau to Bugatti because her daughter Gauguin’s Idea had been bred to Bugatti several years ago and produced…Bravo (the stallion owned by Chris Misita).
The resulting filly is therefore a 3/4 sister to Bravo and she is really lovely- only 2 months old but correct and very pretty. I have high hopes for her!

Great question!

I will be doing just that this year - breeding full sisters to my stallion. I already have one foal from the elder of the two who is rising 2, and another due in October.

Her full sister will be put IF in October. The filly I have on the ground from the elder sister is remarkably close in type to the bloodline I am concentrating on. She is very like her dam, with many of her sire’s definitive characteristics. She is pretty much a 50/50 of her sire and dam.

I fully expect the next filly be similar in type, and I expect the full sister to this dam to produce very similar type too. The stallion is very prepotent, and the mares are linebred, so it’s kind of a given what I can expect to produce.

I have the full sisters *Holyoake Anastasia LOM http://www.welshponies.com/annie.htm and *Holyoake Sucura http://www.welshponies.com/sucura.htm

I also have three other mares by the same stallion as those two, which has proved to be such a FANTASTIC cross with my stallion.

Photos below:
1st is Clanfair All About Me LOM (*Wedderlie Mardi Gras LOM x *Holyoake Anastasia LOM)
2nd Clanfair Signature (*Wedderlie Mardi Gras LOM x *Holyoake Sucura) - he was National Champion last year as a 2 year old.
3rd - Clanfair Martina - 3/4 sister to the first two, and full sister to 4th - Clanfair Malibu Barbie.

This has been an extremely successful family for me both in hand and in performance. I just recently purchased a full sister to Martina and Barbie’s dam, who is in foal to the same stallion (*Wedderlie Marmaduke) that Barbie is. It will be interesting to compare the foals in the spring.

I bred two half sisters (out of the same dam) to the same stallion a number of times.
The two mares were both sisters to A Fine Romance and very much like him.
I bred them to the Holsteiner stallion Landslide (who is inbred to Ladykiller xx).

The resulting foals were all ‘of a type’ - very similar to their Thoroughbred family. They were all beautiful, very good movers, with exceptional jumps, and all very recognizable as related.

Fred you were one I was thinking about when I posted this. Thank you for chiming in!
I love to see what the other posters have made, and will make, using this breeding model. Thank you for your experiences!
