Anyone considered/done PRP or stem cell therapy for your discs?

Thanks.

Whicker has.

Thanks, Bi, yes! I spoke to Whicker the other day, actually, as I had found her post and p.m’d her about it. What an amazing, truly inspiring woman! Her Dr. has many offices and one is near me, so I’m going to go for a consult.

I do have concerns with injecting into a disc, though, and most of these procedures do that. The hospital where I used to work did a procedure called a discogram but stopped doing those as a big study (carragee) found you are more likely to one day reherniate if you inject into a disc.

Explained well here:

Darn, that study certainly puts a damper on my thoughts of getting one of those cool therapies.

(Please, anyone reading - don’t confuse the area injected during epidurals with injecting directly into a disc.)

I’d be interested in hearing more about this as well. What problem are you trying to resolve with this OP?

Heres my problem with the study you posted it has a lot of limitations of external validity. How old were all the participants during the study? Were they all the same age/sex/height/weight? What were their activities like (work/sports/social) during the ten years. Did any of them have accidents? Did they come down with any diseases during the ten years. Its hard to control a study like this without things like what I’ve mentioned above to not affect the outcome of this study. Also they didn’t include/use a large enough patient population/pool or even do repeat trials.

Not sure what back problem you are experiencing but I would found a good orthopedic doctor to talk to about your options. Discograms are usually use as a diagnostic tool to help support the finds on mri’s/xray. I would say most doctors won’t consider one unless you are a candidate for surgery.

Thank you so much, Smiles! Great thinking! I think I was thinking some of what you said but I needed to see if anyone else thought that.

I do have an orthopedist.

I’ve done PRP, but not on discs. I used it to repair a torn hamstring tendon and some ankle tendons/ligaments. I was happy with the results and happy to talk about my experience if you want. Not sure how helpful that will be, since I can’t speak about discs.

Thanks so much, Darkwave. I’m sending you a p.m.

Would it be likely to help with a sacroiliac injury? Of course, there are probably no doctors in this area who use it.

Viney: I searched a bit for you. How far is Columbia?

Viney is in Clarksdale Mississippi, which is a far way from Columbia MO, unfortunately. Closest major metro areas would be Jackson MS or Memphis TN, and those aren’t next door.

(I’m originally from Mississippi :))

Thanks so much, Rome. I had seen her location in the upper right of the post box, actually. When I went searching for MS Drs. that was all I found, though. I wonder if is worth a call to them to see if they know anyone closer.

I tried to search for sacro-iliac doctors in Memphis and got nowhere. I’ve just done a post about what specialists would be likely to do the sacro-iliac.

Called UMC in Jackson, and they have spinal orthopedic specialist in their orthopedic department. I’m going to try for a referral from my local doctor.

Good luck Viney- I hope you get the referral quickly and UMC has some help for you. I know how hard it is to get specialist care in that part of the world. I got lucky with my GP who I found when I crashed my car in front of his office. HE was great about searching out specialists.

SI joints can be ablated or injected. SI joint fusions are very iffy and typically do not work and are exceedingly painful. Physiatrists will inject and if you get a great one like I have, you may experience some relief. Hugs.
