Anyone ever knit stirrup covers?

I have rubber grippy wraps that cover the bottom of my stirrups. The problem is they’re rubbing my flaps a bit when stored on the racks in the tack room.

I’ve started knitting last year and thought this should be a simple project…anyone have a pattern? Otherwise, I’ll have get the kind ladies at the yarn store to help me write one which means I’ll get to use fancy yarn!!

Have not seen the need for it, I think I have seen some made from fabric in a catalog once.

But basically, it’s straight up, knit a rectangle, then fold it over and sew the sides together. Make a draw string and thread it through the top, done. I’d probably use a Red Heart Super Saver yarn, in a variated color.
Or stripes, or whatever. The possibilities are endless. You can try new patterns out, make another set for each season, home and away…heck, maybe sell them!

I use socks  but knit covers sound much easier to put on and cooler.

I have a pair of crocheted ones that I use on one of my saddles. It’s really just two squares stitched together on three sides and the top has a bit of ribbon to turn it into a drawstring pouch. You can be extra fancy and leave a hole in the middle to run your leathers through.

I’ve crocheted a stirrup keeper. Make about half of a scarf, and then fold 8" or so of each end up and sew the sides together to make a pocket. It will keep your stirrups up when you lunge too.

I use one of these: http://www.centaurhorsecare.com/centaurno-scuff-saddle-cover-468665?search=468665

So that my cheese grater irons don’t beat the daylights out of my flaps.

If I need to protect my saddle, I use tights. Just cut the leg off, pull into place then fold down to put extra fabric where it’s needed.

Thanks all! So helpful!!

I’ll admit, I starting wrapping a sock around them to store for winter. And I did see the fleece covers…but it just seemed so much more fun to knit them myself!!

I really love the idea of incorportating a hole for leathers!

A friend of mine makes covers that protect the saddle from being rubbed by the stirrups and girth made from cotton. Not knitting but maybe another idea for you!
