Neighbor is suddenly leaving the country and has 5 yr. old Komondor which she has to protect chickens, her cats and small dog and guard the property(lots of robberies in the neighborhood). This is professionally trained imported dog , beautiful but I know nothing about the breed. I have farmette , next to game land so coyotes and other wildlife are common.
I need advice on the breed , my current beloved dog is 10 with bad hips and house dog. The Komondor has been an outside dog, listens to underground fence supposed to be “sweet” but knows her job(kills possums on command ).
Any advice on the breed, maintenance, personality. Basically is this a bad idea? Currently have 3 horses.
Lovely one in our dog group - young, but already is constantly surveying the horizon, looking, looking, looking…it is bred into them. It is a good idea.
I know several people who have them on their farms. They RAVE about them.
We had two when I was young. The hair was a nightmare, but we were dealing with the show dog side of the spectrum. The grooming process is not something I ever wish to experience again, not sure what a “range” kept coat requires.
The personalities were great, got along well with all of our creatures, we did not have issues with them in that capacity. Standoffish at most towards strangers, never aggressive. Ours were not working dogs, so I cannot attest to their abilities but they were nice and pampered and mostly unemployed except for the occasional dog show with male, female’s show career was very brief and she was spayed and “retired” pretty quickly.
The male lasted for seven years, started to develop arthritic issues and we put him to sleep when the medications stopped working for him. The female made it to eight years, she was smaller and not the same quality as the male, she was put down when she developed lung tumors that made it hard for her to breathe. These things can happen to any dog breed, just sharing as that is what got them in the end.
The male stayed pretty active as he was my “let’s find trouble dog” and he followed me all over my kid universe. I am sure that attributed to his worn out hind end. I loved that dog and I have no doubt he would have protected me against any threat, his idea of involvement was to walk with me to wherever or to lay a couple feet away if I was into something. Wonderful dog and very tolerant of all the grooming and kid silliness I put him through. There was grooming hell to pay when I got him muddy.
Having those two broke my mother’s desire to own dogs with lots if hair, and for that I will be forever grateful.
Neigbors dog is from “working” dogs imported from Hungary. She keeps him clipped except for the face and he lives outside. Sleeps in the barn.He sort of looks like a huge poodle w/o the dread locks. Thanks for the health information as web site states they are very healthy dogs as they (at least outside US) have been breed for working dogs not for show. However if they die young like that I really don’t need my heart broken. I have a tough time when i lose my dog.
I sobbed myself into heat exhaustion sitting in my car after I put a dog down, but I can’t close myself off from loving another
Dog is in NC , she also has Mastiff. Both dogs Livestock guard dogs, good with kids not agressive with people. Neighbor has to leave country very soon and is desperate to find them good homes both 4 yrs. old.Komondor is outside dog (well trained) guards her animals . Any horse people in NC looking for LGD in case I don;t take the Komondor. My current dog may not allow it. People this is one great dog that will protect against coyotoes and bears or …also a sweet love.PM if interested. I’m just trying to help neighbor out .
We had one. Never was aggressive at all with people. Biggest pain in the neck was dealing with the haircoat. Clipping is your friend.
My Ridgeback did not want this dog around so sadly I can’t take her. Great dog shes completely professionally trained., imported dog. I hate not to have her but my old dog just said NO.
