Anyone going to GMHA for pleasure rides?

My name is SharonA and I have a lame-o horse.

Still, he is damn cute and he loves to get out and do things – but only at the walk, due to suspensory issues. I am thinking of going to GMHA (Vermont) for their pleasure rides at the end of this month. Would anyone else with a gimpy or geriatric – but trails-loving – horse be interested in meeting up there? I would be doing the short routes, probably Friday and Saturday, and would be walking 90% of the route.

Wish I could! Feronia is a mostly-walking trail horse now (she will occasionally argue otherwise.) Timing doesn’t work for me though. I’ve heard some of the GMHA trails are quite steep, and she’s not great on steep downhills so I tend to dismount and walk her.

Is this the fall foliage pleasure ride? I’ve always wanted to go but timing hasn’t been right…

Let me get back to you… I’d love to do it and walking is A-OK by me! It’s the end of October right?

I’ve been to do the Fall Foliage rides at GMHA many years. It’s a LOT of hill work…X10. Even if you just walk, horses are using a completely different group of muscles going up and down steep hills (aka mountains). They generally do a short ride and long ride. It’s actually amazing and the scenery and comraderie is really fun. They always used to have a professional photographer out ‘on course’ so you can get some pretty awesome pictures if the photographers still shoot the event. The rides used to be around the last week of September and first week of October.

I have been displeased with the photographers at GMHA. They are clearly “equine only” photographers. I say this because while my horse always looked stunning – glowing, strong, royalty surveying her kingdom, look of eagles, etc. – and I grant you that the background scenery also came out gorgeous, the darn photographer always makes me look dumpy, with a ridiculous ear-splitting grin on my face, and nothing at all like the other pictures of I have me riding, which were taken 40 years ago, in which I look petite and cute. Obviously, the photographers were much better back then.

Resurrecting this thread because… the Mud Ride has just been posted on the website:

Fella and I plan to be there, doing the 5-mile rides at walk/trot. That is, if the weather cooperates. We are fair-weather types.

I like the trails there and hope to make it there a couple of times this summer. Valsmom, i want to see you there!
