Anyone have experience with these automatic fly control dispensers?

I’ve used them for years. I have three in the barn. The batteries in 2 of them last a very short time and the third one must be powered by the Energizer bunny because it never stops. I forget to turn it off in the winter and it will be spraying (or trying as the canister runs out) even on the coldest day.

Would these work if they were mounted much lower in the stall, say about 2’ above the ground? Flies are worst at about floor to 2’ up, so I was thinking if they were mounted low it would be better and lessen the amount of spray getting on hay, in eyes etc. How far out does it spray? I was considering these as an alternative to a fly spray system, I’m not crazy about having fly spray raining down on everything/everyone, though I’m not crazy about the flies either.

^^ Well, usually you want to mount them somewhere the horses can’t reach - because if they are anything like mine - they WILL get their lips on it, and they WILL destroy it.

One of my “neighbors” in my boarding barn has one. I watched her young horse reach up, yank the front door off the device, and he was going to start destroying it before I took it away. His owner remounted it even higher - totally out of reach.

I’ve been thinking about getting these as well… but I do use fly predators in my muck piles. If I used the sprayers in my run-in’s, would the manure/urine I collect harm my predators??? Is it a one or the other thing? Or can I use both?

Yes. Love them.[/QUOTE]

Also have them and love them - use in barn and garage (dog stays in garage and sprayer works on flies and mosquitoes).

An update on mine:

I’ve had mine installed since Friday. Unfortunately, I have no appreciable reduction in flies to report at this time. :frowning:

Not quite the miracle I was hoping for, although the flies really aren’t that bad in my barn.

One interesting observation-- one of my mares has been quite reluctant to enter the barn since installation of the dispenser (her stall is open to the pasture and she can come and go as she pleases). I really don’t think she likes the odor of the fly spray, which concerns me. The others have no issue with it.

I’ve been using them for 8 years and one finally had to be replaced last week. I have a 3 stall barn plus a feed/hay room and 2 dispensers work just fine. As others have stated, place them out of reach of the horses.

I’ve been using them for about 8 years, too. I have one in each stall, the aisle and the run-in shed. They do not work miracles, but they do knock down the population. Combined with fans, the horses get a nice break from flies while inside.

I don’t worry too much about the chemical effect on the horses since mine are not in for more than a few hours at a time. The sprayers go off once very 15 minutes.

I would like to upgrade to a whole-barn automatic system someday. The flies are really bad this year.

Reviving this thread after a search…does anyone know if Glade dispensers still fit the CV cans?

I bought glade dispensers last year and the cans fit

AWESOME!!! Thanks so much!

I also have used them for years. I have one in each stall, one in each run in, and 4 in my indoor. Batteries last for years, just turn them off when you take them down in the winter. What i really miss though are the Breathe easy ones. those were the ones that kept the gnats away. Can’t find them anywhere…they were a menthol based spray.

Aren’t you worried about your horses breathing that stuff in? Or eating/drinking it when it sprays onto their food/water (thinking in the barn)? I would also worry about cats and small dogs inhaling/ingesting it.

Do you use fly spray on your horse?

Yes, but I only spray it when there are no cats around, and on the horse in the aisle, never in their stall or near food or water. I also do not spray their face (I use roll on or Swat), nor do I spray it when I (or anyone) is upwind and can accidentally breathe it in. I also wash my hands after.

And of course, being in Canada, I do not have access to the same strength of toxins in the sprays elsewhere, even so, I am still careful with the stuff we do have.

We used the Country Vet dispensers for many years, until they finally quit on us, then replaced them with the air freshener ones as recommended here. The replacements have worked at least as well as the country vet ones, and they run on smaller batteries, so yay for that.

Ours are installed high up in the stalls, on the sides away from the feed bowls and automatic waterers. Our barn is so airy and ventilated, I expect the spray doesn’t stay for long, but think it helps. We don’t have flies that bite, however, no horseflies or stable flies or deerflies, just “filth” flies such as houseflies.

We’ve found that fly tape placed up high in the stalls catches a lot of flies. We’ve used both the standard inexpensive strips that unfurl from a tiny cardboard canister, or the reel system: https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=49D03357-2D8A-4403-9C18-3FC2D5163D74

It’s very satisfying to see flies stuck on fly tape:yes:.

The amount of spray that comes out is minimal, and you don’t install it near their food or water. Most barns around here have fly spray systems that release way more mist than comes out of these little things. I have one in each stall and they seem to really be helping, I don’t see any flies when I’m cleaning. I need to install more in the wash rack and aisle though.

The amount of spray that comes out isn’t anywhere near a single full spray from a typical fly spray container (not even half, maybe a 1/4?) and it’s very fine. It doesn’t shoot across the stall or anything. You set them up away from food and water.

I’ve been using them for years. They really work.

I used them for several years and they worked well, hung high one per stall. I eventually replaced with a Shoo-fly mister system because I got tired of 2 D batteries per mister per stall for our 5-6 month fly season plus a replacement can per month times 5 stalls plus time on the ladder started to add up. The whole barn system definitely knocks down the flies a bit better and is significantly better for gnats but for a smaller place I’d use these again.
