Anyone have info on Zooloog KWPN stallion

I may bid on his frozen but can’t find good conformation photos etc… Any info on him would be great, thanks in advance. I’ve already requested photos from frozen semen distributor but have not got any as of yet.

Robin Hardiman co-owned Zoolog with a friend here in Oklahoma when he passed away. Foxen had a Zoolog colt before I got her. Before that, he was in California. You might check with Ernie and JoAnn with RPSI as I believe that they might be able to help you.

I knew him and saw him here back when he was competing. Even back then he wasn’t all that exciting, and there were very few warmblood stallions around. I don’t know of any of his babies that have done anything of note. I dealt with him once at a show, and he was a nicely behaved stallion. I’m not sure what you’re breeding for. And I guess it kind of depends on what you can get the semen for. Just from a look at your site, it seems like the stallions you’re using are pretty nice. If you know Ijsselmeer (who I know pretty well) he’s kind of like that, though I don’t think he ever did as well, even though Ijsselmeer came later.

Your best bet is people in So. CA would would remember him or might have babies.

Wow, BTDT, that’s a pretty dismissive statement – and while I can’t argue with your subjective assessment (since I never had any direct experience with the horse, and you did), I do think you’re wrong on the facts. Zooloog indeed may never have gotten to the tippy-top of his sport, but he came pretty damned close, and the get he left behind in Holland before he was imported to the U.S. did quite well, considering their relatively small number. From the Web site sporthorse-breeder.com:

The second best KWPN horse in Rome [1998 WEG] was the 75% Gelderlander mare Elorianne, sired by the 100% Gelderlander Grand Prix dressage stallion Zooloog, who was the only pure Gelderlander stallion approved for riding horse breeding by the KWPN. Because of his Gelderlander heritage, Zooloog hardly obtained any breedings, and the mares that were bred to him were not top of the line. As a result, Zooloog sold to the US, which he represented in the 1991 Pan Am Games, where he was a Silver Medalist. From the 49 foals that he left behind in the Netherlands, four are competing internationally in dressage. . . .

[Zooloog’s record:]
· 1984 Completed 100 Day Test, Ermelo, Holland
· 1986 First Premium foals in Holland
· 1989 Gold Medal USOC Olympic Festival
· 1990 CDS PSG Horse of the Year
· 1991 Silver Medalist Pan American Games
· 1991 U.S. Olympic Selection Trials

I looked very hard at breeding my own mare to him a couple of years ago. Alongside Ijsselmeer and perhaps, sometime in the future, the young stallion Alexandro P., he offers (as far as I know) the only pure Gelders blood available to American breeders.

In the end, I went in a different direction with my mare, for two reasons. One, she was a maiden, and the logistics of using frozen were, in my particular situation, tricky; and two, Zooloog did not have an outstanding walk, which gait unfortunately happens to be my mare’s weakest point.

I very much liked corresponding with Zooloog’s last owner, who still has some of his semen stored away (I just checked: she’s the contact listed on the RPSI auction form). The horse did not have an easy life before she bought him, but she made sure that his last years were happier ones. He died young, at nineteen.

I would use him in a minute on a mare lacking in – or to whom I was looking to add – substance, an exceptional trot and canter, or simply some of that wonderful Gelders DNA.

I sent an email and asked her which of my Dutch mares she thought might be a good match with him. I adore the Gelders so this may be a breeding for me to produce a future Gelder bred broodmare (hopefully after a nice competition career). So you think he needs a really good walk? My Ferro mare has a nice walk but I am going to really look at them again (hard since they are all about to pop, and big as a house, lol). If you get a chance to look at my mares page I’d love to hear which one you think would be a good cross. You can post here or pm or email me, I’d love to hear constructive criticism.

By the way, I had read the above about him and was quite impressed that with such a small foal crop he acheived quite a bit!!!

I have a video!!!

I have a VHS video of him somewhere. I think Stephen is riding him, or maybe he is coaching? Zooloog is doing PSG in the video, I believe.

His situation is kind of like Facet - minimal offspring on the ground, but a very high index for those that went to the Top of the Sport = FEI.

Yes, there is still semen available!

I’ll write more later . . . .

Maybe I have the wrong Zooloog? Tom Valter was riding him and he was involved in this weird “kidnapping” thing. I don’t ever remember him being in the Pan American games, let alone the selection trials. I never heard of any horse by him, which is a little weird considering there weren’t that many stallions at the time.

Hey, if you like him. Great. I’m just telling you what I remember of the horse I know. And, as always, it depends on what you’re breeding for. There weren’t a lot of big name warmbloods around then. If you have a video of him or get, that would be the most informative thing for what you want. And it sure sounds like you know a LOT more about the bloodlines. I have know idea about Gelderlanders.

I’m sorry if you felt it wasn’t constructive. I was just trying to help and tell you what I remember.

Oh no please don’t think I thought it wasn’t constructive, I do. I am very glad to hear your input. I want anything, good, bad or whatever. I am just thinking about purchasing semen of his but am not really sure as yet. One thing I saw that worried me was maybe a bit sickle hocked??? Is that just a bad picture or is that a possibility?

Sickle hocked? Definately not sickle hocked: http://www.gelderlanderhorse.nl/pedigree/nederlands/horse.php?N=00000509

You can see that the cannon bone on the right leg is straight up and down (normal, as it should be), while the left leg is out behind him.

OK, good. I wasn’t trying to be anything but honest. The picture Fantastic put up is nice! That does look like the horse I remember, though much younger.

I don’t see a sickle hock either, and don’t remember anything like that. As I recall, he competed for awhile, so he held up. From that picture, his neck is really right up out of his shoulder. Good neckset for an FEI horse.

I love him! I have a video of him schooling, in a lesson. Nice gaits, and not as heavy as some of the photos make him look.

Much better picture than the one I saw and yes his legs look great. I think he would be a nice cross for any of my 3 Dutch girls, but am thinking the Ferro mare might be the best cross, not sure though still thinking and I really need to watch them walk, hard since they are all big as a house right now, lol.

Resurrecting this old post as I have what is thought to be the last of the Zooloog semen and plan on using it next month. I do hope it works!

CDE Driver, good for you – that’s very exciting!

@CDE Driver That’s awesome! I have a friend who loves the old type Gelder, old type Dutch horse (and is actually looking for something GIGANTIC and WIDE/SUBSTANTIAL) right now, due to her incredibly tall height and long legs. GLAD to see folks still are interested in Gelderlander blood. Have fun!
