Anyone Hunting Draft-Crosses? Bit Ideas..

For some reason the Uxeter Kimberwicke seems to do the trick on my tank.

He has a bull neck, he’s downhill, has a hard mouth, and is spoiled and stubborn. Like you, I have no intention of selling him.

I only use that bit for hunting.

Kimberwicke Pelham Kimberwicke Pelham

I have been on some bit odysseys. I too deal with a “yee-ha!” freight train cross country coupled with a tired and delicate flower in the ring.
I struggle now with my husband’s bitting options (see Off Course “Next Step Up from Snaffle)
I think the Uxeter Kimberwicke (with slots on the ring) is a great bit. My horse will not tolerate a jointed bit, prefers solid with a low port. Your horse might prefer the opposite. The beauty is you can readily purchase this bit either way. I eventually discarded the kimberwicke due to the one rein plus curb chain assembly. I essentially had to ride her “western” when she was being good. Once I picked up contact, dangit, we were on the curb action. I stepped up to the plate, bought a second set of skinny reins (1/2”) bought a pelham in her preferred mouthpiece and we have been happy ever since. We hack along on the snaffle and I can implement the curb action when I need it. We are both very happy now. AND she was a head tosser, the tossing has ceased. I found after a week of riding with double reins, you do not even think about it. MUCH easier in practice than theory would have you believe. Just do it! Good Luck!
