Anyone know about Singapore cats?

I will always have an off-the-street cat but I have to say, I’ve met my first Singapore this week and WOWZA is he a charmer! He’s been in my ICU all week with two chest tubes in (ok, negative points for health issues) and he is the sweetest damn thing I’ve ever met. GROOMS you constantly, purrs, jumps all around…like this fool has never ever had a bad day. He is better than most dogs we have in.

Is this typical of the breed? Just curious if there are any aficionados out there; this was a first for me!

I know they are the smallest breed of purebred cat.

Was it an injury or something else?

I worked in a vet clinic last year and we had two as patients. They were very sweet, smart, sensitive cats. One had severe dental disease and had to have extensive work done and he wouldn’t eat post-surgery unless his owner was there with him. His owner was very eccentric and I was the only one on the staff that got along well with him so he would bring the cat to the front desk to feed him and talk with me. Eventually the cat would eat for me but he wouldn’t with anyone else. Very cute little cat and lots of personality from what I could tell in a few days while he was down and out. The owner would bring his other cat with him to visit when it was feeding time too-she was more quiet and reserved. The owner was totally enthralled with both of them.

Had some puss in his lungs; he was there with bilateral chest tubes having lavages done to help break up the congestion. Apparently he’s got boatloads of health problems but the sweetest darn thing.

And that would make sense, because he is tiny.

I’d never heard of them before seeing this thread, but I think it’s interesting that the breed essentially comes from three animals, with an occasional infusion from only a handful of additional animals. The genetic bottleneck could certainly be the reason why the one in your clinic has such health issues! If you’re really interested in the breed, I’d think finding a breeder who’s really selecting for healthy critters would be important

I interesting history…

Hey, I just saw this! I had a Singapura that I’d show! When I went to the breeder’s house, it was amazing. Singapuras are NOT shy, are super friendly and playful, and KNOW what they want! He was an amazing show cat that I showed all the way to his Supreme Grand Championship! He was quite gluttonous, and because Singapuras are supposed to be thin, he was always on a diet when I was showing him. I retired him after that, and he got to eat to his heart’s content.

Singapuras are an amazing breed, but have strong personalities. Just a warning if you have other cats in the household, since the Singapura is going to demand ALL of your time and attention. Great breed! Thanks for the memories!
