Anyone know Greenwood Stable or Julie Hersey, Derry, NH?

Has anyone bought a horse from Julie Hersey, Greenwood Stables, in Derry, NH? I believe she’s a dealer. Some friends of mine are considering buying a horse from her that sounds good, but this would be a long-distance purchase. If you have any info on her, I’d appreciate a PM.
Thanks!

post the question on www.equinesite.com Bulletin Board ( aka forum), Google both her name and the stable. Check Rate My Horse Pro. So much info out there these days.

I bought a horse for a student last year. She was very nice easy to talk to and seemed to care about her animals. The horse we got still is wonderful and sound! Only neg was she didn’t budge on the price but he was priced reasonably.

BUYER BEWARE!!! DO NOT EVER BUY A HORSE FROM JULIE HERSEY!!! Although this is an old post I wanted to get the word out about this unscrupulous, dishonest business woman. I bought a horse from her she said was beginner, child, husband safe, 16h, show ready, temperament of 1, very old soul, no vices except didn’t like his ears touched. She seemed in a big hurry to sell the horse. She asked me to write the check out to her boyfriend so she could avoid paying taxes on the big purchase! Does this tell you anything about her integrity? Told me the horse was up to date on everything including farrier, dental, etc. She said she needed to sell the horse because she was going to have shoulder surgery and couldn’t ride him. Once she got my money, she promptly dumped the horse off with the cheapest shipper she could find and went on a big vacation out west with her boyfriend. When the horse arrived he was terribly thin, his hooves were overgrown, he needed dental work, and he was not even close to 16 hands, in fact barely 15.2! I never even rode the horse. Not only was he not child, beginner, or husband safe, he was barely safe enough for a professional trainer to ride him. He was no where even close to show ready and was afraid of everything. This horse had never seen a trail even though I was told he was trail ridden by a 64 year old man. Julie never responded to my emails, phone calls, or texts, in fact I never heard from her again. had to sell the horse a month later at a huge loss. My trainer told me I should hire an attorney to go after Julie Hersey for blatant misrepresentation. The new buyer who is a very seasoned experienced horse woman almost got hurt badly when this horse just took off on her for no reason and she couldn’t get him to stop! He is completely unpredictable and dangerous. She is now trying to contact Julie about the horse, but of course Julie is never going to contact her. I’m writing this in an effort to warn people about this person. I don’t want anyone to go through what I just went through. I see she is now trying to sell more horses on DreamHorse.com. BEWARE!!!

So apparently you never saw the horse in person, never tried the horse, never had a PPE, didn’t request current pictures/videos with dates on it. While she should not have done what she did I figure that somebody willing to cheat the government is willing to cheat me. There were lots of red flags there. If you needed a child safe horse or husband horse that is not one I would buy without ever trying.
Good luck on going after her. My guess is you can’t get blood from a stone. You don’t even have proof you paid her for the horse since you paid the boyfriend.

You only had the horse for a month before selling it again? What did you expect would happen in one month??? And as to the shipper, why did she pay for it? When I buy a horse, I’m responsible for paying shipping.

I got my guy from Europe and he was super over there. Easy going and a joy to ride. Over here? A nutcase. I fell off over and over again because he had a hop/spin that I couldn’t sit to, I just wasn’t used to that stuff. But I realized he needed time to settle as everything was different for him than in his previous life. I certainly didn’t blame the seller for that, he just wasn’t used to life here yet and needed time to settle into our barn routine and find his place. It took over 6 months for him to settle where I could ride him without an incident. He will still do the spin when he’s freaked about something, but I can usually figure out what it is and either ride through it or if it’s bad, put him away if he won’t calm down.

So I have a little bit of experience with this woman and she is absolutely a horrible business woman and horsewoman. I made an appointment with her to go see a horse and she blew me off. She has about 20 horses on maybe a two acre property. She has a tiny indoor that you can ride in, the paddocks were super deep with mud and manure. The horse that she advertised as a 15.2h beginner safe horse was a pony and last I saw she was trying to give him away for free as a project horse. I’m guessing he was super dangerous and was probably drugged in order to get pictures of him with a child on his back. There were no videos.

I’ve seen quite a few posts on FB about her and how she lied about horses and sold them as beginner safe when they absolutely were not. Anyone who does any research can figure out she isn’t ethical. Every horse ad that she has reads the same way “beginner safe, show experience, has been extensively trail ridden, etc.”

Yes, there were red flags you should have picked up on but also, what this woman does is deceitful and dangerous.

I’m sorry for adding something so many years on, but I unfortunately had another bad experience with her three years ago. I was a low intermediate rider, and my parents were going to allow me to adopt a horse. They knew horses were my passion, and essentially my only sport, and they supported me. For the record, they were not equestrians at all. Before buying, I had read so many articles on how to spot fake buyers, what to look for, what to do, etc. However, knowing what to look for is different than being able to spot it. I felt prepared, but I was not in the slightest. Anyways, my dad was looking on craigslist for a while and found quite a few horses from Greenwood Stables. We decided to go up and see them on our way up to go skiing.
Once there, I saw Merlin, Cisco (I think?) and Romeo. All were in a paddock together, Cisco was bullying the other two, and they were pretty deep in mud. I had seen worse though. I figured they probably had just gotten heavy rain. So we are talking to Julie and she seems nice. Tells me all about the horses, and then she brings them in to tack up and ride. She had some of the other barn members groom for her while we talked. I rode Merlin first, he was sweet and I liked him the best, but he had runny eyes and my mother didn’t like that. Then, Cisco was way too hot headed. Finally, I rode Romeo. As we walked him into the ring, a giant tree branch fell right next to us, and he didn’t spook a bit. I took that as a very good sign. She said that he was bought off a video from Montana when he was three, then owned him for the past six years. He was completely bombproof, beginner safe, a fun ride, etc. I rode, and he was a little pushy, but I figured it was the fact that I wasn’t used to him yet.
At the end, we told her we would let her know in a few days, and she mentioned another family was coming to look at him, and they were likely going to buy. That night, my parents ask me if I had made a decision. I was thinking that that was just the first stop of many. Maybe horse #10 would be the one, but not horse #1. But My parents told me I looked good on him, and it was a match made in heaven. Finally, I agreed. I was so excited to get a horse, and I figured whatever vices he had, I would work with them. We bought him the next day.
By the next Monday, he was shipped to a barn right near my house. The first thing I noticed was that his hooves were really cracked, he lost a lot of weight, and his skin seemed droopy. Looking back now, I think she reduced his feed to save money after we bought him. Then, we found his behavior was awful. He didn’t understand the concept of an outdoor ring, he took off, bucked, wouldn’t pick up his feet, bit people, etc. I’m nearly sure he was drugged while I tried him out. His hooves were likely painted too. But the worst of all was his lameness. Suddenly, he was nearly falling over from a front leg lameness. Julie answered my calls for a little bit, but then stopped. Everyone was telling me to send him back, but I wasn’t going to subject him to that again. Three years on, I still have him, he’s super sweet, he’s got some spunk in him, and he loves food. However, the lameness is still there. I’ve worked for years to build up his other muscles, and he’s on a low dose of bute to negate it. He is cleared by the vet for riding, however.
This woman takes advantage of new buyers, selling them lies, making them feel pressured to buy, then cutting contact afterwards. I was lucky to have the support and money to stick with my horse, but not everyone does. Julie does a lot of good things in her community, but I don’t believe she’s the hero everyone makes her out to be. Unless you are an experienced buyer, avoid Julie Hersey, otherwise you’ll fall into her traps.
Also, sorry for the long post, I just want to make sure everyone knows that she can trick people with her charm, and then you miss all the warning signs.

Hello, yes I know this was posted a few years ago but after reading all of this I thought I should add some input. I am a former student of Julie, now married and is now Julie Inglis, and she was a very self centered person. She would gossip with her vet and farrier about students she had, she would put students down for not knowing how to do something and at one point I worked for her during covid, no pay, doing all the barn work, but got to ride for free, her donkeys were in a small portion of her school horse paddock in a few inches of mud and hoofs were VERY out grown and they looked neglected. One time she was talking to me and was very loud so everyone could hear my private business. Julie had sold so many horses that were supposed to be for her students and wouldn’t tell that rider that she was selling the horse, she had done it to me. I am still looking for the horse she sold because I believe he was my heart horse. Julie is now living in Concord and has half ownership over the barn after selling. Hopefully this helps!
