Anyone know where I can find s good - but affordable - exercise saddle?

I used to break and gallop TB’s for a living and while I mainly just teach kinds H/J lessons now a days, I still train - and break a few horses on the side.

Anyway, My newest training horse is coming this weekend to be started, and I would really love to find an exercise saddle to start him in. I know…I’m nuts, but it’s all I’ve ever used to start babies in, and I shudder at the thought of having to use my CC saddle, or a Western one.

Thanks in advance for any links/names/numbers you may have of tack shops where I could find a saddle (used is fine)

EBAY…??

You can get better saddles than the one above for half the price. The problem is I can’t find the damn website of the company I bought 3 from in October.

Ohh - I LOVE Quillins!! I wish like anything I still had the saddle I galloped in. It was like the one above - so soft, and with the half tree.

What I would love to find woudl be an old Steeplechase saddle.

DickHertz - please post that website if yuou remember it.

The person is a QH trainer in the southwest if anyone else can remember it. He used to have them on ebay as well, but I don’t see any there.

Bob Ruth Saddles out west make REALLY nice exercise saddles. I just can’t find the website at the moment…

They’re around $350 — there’s usually a LONG waiting list, though (last time I got one I had to wait 12 months).

Dunno if it’s any good to you, but this (UK) tack shop sells them.

I think I have one upstairs I have no use for. I will ask hubby if he feels like parting with it.

Editing to add, found it. Your PMs are full so I’ll link here.

Is this what you’re looking for?

Exercise Saddle

Big Dees has great prices and good quality on there exercise saddles. Check them out at http://www.bigdweb.com/ but I would call them at 1-800-321-2142 since their site is difficult to navigate.

Maryland Saddlery Butler md http://www.marylandsaddlery.com/
has a consigment part that has several almost new looking exercise saddles -they have a very forward flap-almost looked custom made–excellent leather–for about $275.

I was thinking of buying one myself for a crow-hopping young horse I have.

I love riding babies in exercise saddles-you feel glued to them-they should not slip and you have no saddle knee rolls blocking you from bracing your leg in a buck if needed! (I also love Quillin-the quality is assured!)

I have a few that are sitting around, pm me for prices if your still looking!

I saw that forward flap saddle you are talking about yesterday. That thing was weird looking, I would love to see it on a horse as opposed to a saddle rack because I just can’t picture how it would sit. I guess it would be good for the shark fin wither types but don’t know for sure.

EBAY

I bought 2 on Ebay - One cost $65 and the other $48. I know it’s a bit of risky but I was very pleased with mine, as long as you buy from a reputable seller you should be fine - most will refund you if you are not happy. Saved me a bunch of dollars!!! Good Luck!

Do you mean Bob Ross? I’ve been looking for a Bob Ross but can’t find them anywhere now. KBC used to carry them but they’ve stopped. I emailed them to see why but haven’t recieved an answer yet.

Better late than never…I just ran across this thread. DH and I trained TB’s for over 40 years and we have a ton of race equipment including a very lightly used “English” made, 1/2 tree saddle. PM me if you are still looking. JB
