I have an oval-shaped head and am very sensitive to helmet fit. If it doesn’t fit exactly right, I get bad headaches. I’m looking to move to a different helmet look, and the Troxell Cheyenne Rowdy caught my eye. However, instead of having adjustable thingies to put inside (like my current Troxell Sport), the Cheyenne Rowdy seems to be an “exact fit” helmet. I haven’t seen one in any local stores to try on, so I’d be buying on-line, without trying it on. Anyone try one?
I have not tried that particular model, but in my experience and from what I have read, Troxell tend to be for rounder heads. I have an oval head and love the fit of my IRH with the dial fit (allows me to adjust for a thin winter hat vs no hat). I do need another helmet soon and the Tipperary Sportage I tried fit okay, but I do think the IRH was a better fit.
I did have an IRH before the Troxell Sport I have now, and I really liked it. However, I got another one, exact same size and model, and it didn’t fit right. I figured they changed the recipe, so to speak. I got the Troxell to fit me by using the padded, stick-on things, and it concerns me that the Cheyenne doesn’t appear to come with them.
You could probably get the padding elsewhere. You might be better off with the Tipperary Sportage, which comes with pads to customize the fit. I’m hoping to be able to try some on at the upcoming horse expo. Good to know the IRH may have changed.
The Cheyenne Rowdy does seem like a really interesting helmet, but it is a little hard to find in shops. You might find that a store that caters more to western riders is carrying it, and you might also try SmartPak, which has free return shipping on sized items.
A lot of stores carry Troxel and could probably get them in for you if you asked. It’s just hard for them to carry the full line in all the sizes.
Oh - I just noticed that they now have a version of it in the CinchFit system, which you might like better.
I just bought a Troxel Intrepid with the Cinch Fit and LOVE it. I’m not a helmet person, but this is super lightweight and comfy and fits like it isn’t even there.
OK, just spent an hour in the local tack shop trying on helmets. They didn’t have the biggest selection, but I did get a good idea. The Tipparary Sportage didn’t work - it had pressure points that gave me a headache. I did try a couple Troxells with the Cinch Fit. The Liberty did the best, but didn’t come in any colors I wanted! I tried Ovations and Troxells, along with the Sierra, but the only Cheyenne they had was wayyyyyyy too big for me, and it had been a special order. The Sierra didn’t fit right. I am so hard to fit, darn it!
I have a Troxel Sierra and really like it, fits my oval head well. It replaced a Dakota that someone broke the dial fit on. If you wore a Sport, though…even before they changed the fit, my brother (who has an IRH now) could wear one but I couldn’t. They aren’t meant for a long head. I do like that Troxel’s making ones that have pretty colors now. Velvet is too hard to keep clean (and too hot!) and I HATE the h/j helmets that are ‘in’ now.
I actually ended up ordering an IRH All Terrain and am eagerly waiting for it to arrive!
I ride western, in Montana, where really no one wears a helmet (for western anyway). And I do. Had been wearing a Troxel, grudgingly, hated it but like my brain such as it is, but just today got an IRH ATH…I don’t want to take it off it is soooooo comfortable. Not really bubble heady (my husband always told me I looked like I was ready to get on the short bus when I wore my Troxel). So…I hope you like yours JumpQH! I don’t care what others do and don’t wear as long as my head is comfortable and protected!!

Thanks for the feedback, lilitiger2! Good to hear! After a major wreck, I decided to protect myself and have worn a helmet ever since. I am in the minority, but got over it pretty quickly! I’ll post when I get to wear the new helmet! I was hoping it would show up Friday so I could use it today, but no such luck.
Oh good, PLEASE post and share what you think! I was down trying on helmets - Tiippararys, Troxels and so on, and just kept coming back to the ATH. The others felt like they sat too high up on my head. And yes, it only takes one wreck, or even a small stumble. I am indeed the lone “brain bucket” wearer (I’msure there are others but I haven’t met them!) I also do not care. My husband will not wear a helmet for his motorcycle so not likely he wil wear one for riding. I have told him if he has a head injury and I am caring for him, I will make him eat liver and sushi (his two least favorite foods) very day! I don’t know if our culture in Montana will ever come around on this.Many bull riders do now so maybe in the next 50-60 years!!

The helmet is here! I was disappointed that it was pulled out of it’s original box to be shipped (and by a big company, too!), and even more disappointed to discover it was manufactured nearly TWO YEARS AGO! June 2011!
I tried it on and it seemed to fit fine, but the real test will be this upcoming weekend when I ride again. I will report back!
I agree - with more and more cowboys going to helmets, I think more people will follow! I also agree that if someone doesn’t use a helmet for bike riding or motorcycle riding, they sure won’t for horseback riding!
OK, lilitiger2, I finally got to ride in my new helmet! It has a couple pressure points where the back part comes down (like where my ears are), but it wasn’t too bad. My Troxell was actually more comfy because it had padding everywhere, whereas the IRH didn’t need any to fit. It works, and I’m more comfortable in it because of the way it looks!
