I bought some dust for my piggies and hens and it says it is safe for horses but I’m skeptical. It works pretty good for the other animals and in their coop as I sprinkled it on the ground too.
So has anyone used on their horses the powders or the pour on that are for broad livestock use? I’m wondering if they would work better than the usual fly sprays, especially on the sprayer hating mare I have.
Currently, I use Celebration spot on, alternate actual sprays between Wipe X and Pyranha, and I do a feed through fly control supplement so all that helps but maybe the cattle people know something we don’t by using the dust or pour ons.
Anyone have experience using these on their horses?
I have. Had no problems. It contains permethrin. The bottle has a horse and cow on it. Thanks for reminding me. I’m not currently using it but just remembered the other day that I have it and was thinking about using it again. It’s a bit of a pain to apply. I use medical gloves when handling it. I bought a dust pistol off amazon. Works ok. Your horse who doesn’t like sprays may or may not like the dust pistol. I’d think you could possibly put it inside a knit glove of some sort and “dust” your horse with it. Or put inside some other item, maybe punch tiny holes in it. Putting some on your hand then rubbing in works but there is waste. I was using it this spring on one horse. When bugs got worse and started effecting other horses, I switched to sprays.
Good to know! Thanks! Luckily none of my guys are sensitive but I like to alternate. The dusts are much cheaper and we aren’t showing this year so I will probably give it a try
I used it briefly on my young mare right after she was rescued from a bad situation. The powder also treats lice, which she was infested with due to poor management. It was kind of messy and a pain to deal with, but it seemed to work okay and the can/package lasts a long time.
EDIT: Sorry, should clarify it was the dust, not the pour on.
