Anyone used Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for a dog?

My beloved Irish Wolfhound Tori has recently (in June) had a bout of septic arthritis in her elbow. She had a high fever (104.5) and swelling and acute pain in her elbow. It was treated with two weeks of doxy (at that time we were thinking could have been tick borne), Cipro and Ammoxi. Three vets including the orthopedic specialist I will be going to have viewed the radiographs.

Since then, Tori has been on tramadol and gabapentin (can’t do NSAIDS as it was thought that might have contributed to the septic arthritis, she had been on meloxicam for three years following bilateral surgery for UAP). She has had three sessions of acupuncture, two cold laser treatments, and a chiropractic treatment. I do 2-4 cold wrap treatments daily.

She has an appointment with the orthopedic vet who viewed her rads, and who offers Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy, which I will likely do if he thinks it is indicated.

I just wondered whether anyone had any experience with PRP, whether dog, horse, or human. I know Tiger Woods had it, in addition to other professional athletes.

I would appreciate any input!

Poor Tori is quite lame on her left front, and has had some muscle wasting.

She is signed up for a Tracking Seminar in November. We had been progressing so well in Trackimg, and has gotten an invitation to the Eukanuba Obedience Classic in December because of her two High In Trials. It would be nice if she could do these things, but the main thing is for her to have a better quality of life, even if she were no longer able to participate or compete in such events.

I was just curious to know of others’ experiences with PRP.

Yes, my dog, a 4 year old Boxer, had this with both knee repairs. She is a frisbee-catching athlete again so I highly recommend it! I try to keep her very lean and she is on a ton of supplements but I do think the PRP was beneficial. How old is Tori? My crystal ball tells me that these sorts of therapies are going to become very commonplace in the months and years ahead for both humans and companion animals alike. It is a great time to benefit from modern medicine.

I have been dealing with a septic carpus joint since May 15th so I would love to know how you make out!!! My girl was 3 legged lame overnight. Initially thought cellulitis as we found a small puncture. She was on Clindamycin & Baytril 2 weeks with slight improvement. Added cold laser treatments and was just about 100% after 8 treatments and on June 28th was 3 legged again in a matter of 6 hours. She also has been on Tramadol & Gabapentin. She was seen at a Specialty Center where I got 2 different diagnosis, 2 vets said Immune Mediated Polyarthritis, start her on 30mg Prednisone 2x/day, the ortho surgeon said infection. Finally took her to an internist who says septic joint. I’m still not sure. Playing a waiting game now. She was on pred 10mg2x/day for 10 days and now we are titrating down. Still on Doxy, Tramadol & Gabapentin. She’s" better" but because of the damage to the right carpus joint and bearing so much weight on the left, she now has subluxation of both !

Yes we do it at our hospital. There seem to be positive results for many but do not see instantaneous results. We primarily use it for tendon and ligament healing but have done some intraarticular injections as well.

I am very glad to hear of your good experience with PCP!

Tori is three years old, she is on supplements too- Ligaplex, Phycox, Dausequin with MSM, Tumeric, and gets a hard-boiled egg every day.

Wow, your poor dog has really been through it! I wonder if the doxy is the right antibiotic for the septic arthritis, if that is what she has. Tori was on doxy for two weeks, but that was in addition to the Cipro and Ammoxi which she is to be on for eight weeks. Did they do a joint tap? Tori didn’t have one.

I too am worried about her other elbow, bearing so much of her weight, but she gets the cold laser on both elbows. I would think if they do the PRP they will do both sides, at least I hope so.

What breed and age is your girl?

I knew a Rottie who had immune mediated arthritis and then developed septic arthritis. In his case, the septic arthritis did resolve. In his case, they thought the prednisone given to treat the immune mediated polyarthritis surpressed his immune system, and that is why he developed the septic arthritis. They had to take him off prednisone to treat the infection.

Jingles for your girl!

Tori has another cold laser treatment today, I feel like that is helping. She has an appointment with the orthopedic vet tomorrow at the vet specialty hospital, I don’t know if they will do the PRP tomorrow or just evaluate her. I hope they do it.

If it is good enough for Tiger Woods…

Abbey is an 11 yr old Boxer/Lab. She had 2 joint taps and neither on grew anything. They included cytology with the second one and the results of that are what screamed infection. I even spoke with the pathologist at the lab and her impression was joint sepsis, no indication of any immune mediated components. She wanted her off the Pred and Baytril and to start the Doxy. She’s getting the Pred every other day now and her last dose will be Monday. I guess we will know for sure if she worsens off the Pred.
Jingling the PRP resolves Tori’s issues. He’s so young!

Yes, we did that too as part of the rehab process. Sounds like your Tori is fortunate to have you as an owner! You are on the right track and I hope she recovers quickly.
