Just bought an Amigo Bravo 100g Lite with the disc closure. Didn’t realize it had that until I got it home. Any opinions? Can’t find any reviews. Seems kind of odd (and breakable!), but perhaps it’s not.
I hate mine.
I got one in January 2018. Within one month, the disc cracked in half and a ton of the stitching on the blanket came undone.
I got a free replacement of the entire blanket plus an extra disc from Horseware.
Well, I just put my literally brand new, never out of the bag, stayed in my climate controlled house blanket on my horse the other day. Within 24 hours, the waterproofing failed and leaked all over my horse’s hind end.
I’m still waiting to hear back from Horseware. I emailed them Saturday. I’m furious at the lack of quality in their Amigos. Quality has decreased as prices have increased.
The disc closure seems like a new thing just for the sake of being new–it’s not actually any better than the V-snap closure. It does keep the blanket closed higher up so there is no gap between the blanket and the neck rug, which is nice, but it doesn’t matter when the rest of the blanket disintegrates.
Well that makes my decision a lot easier. Thanks for the info. I have an older Amigo I love (just a sheet, navy blue w/the reflective strips). This new one seemed cheaper quality right out of the bag.
The disc-closure is normal for Amigos. I haven’t had a problem with it, personally - I prefer disc-closure to the old hook/buckle, but also would take clips as well. I think the less hardware in front of the horse, the better, but the drawback is the chest is not adjustable.
Amigos have always been lower-quality blankets. They are the cheap version of Rambo. It goes Rambo, Amigo, Mio in terms of quality.
Common failures in Amigo:
Stitching – any time you buy one, reinforce the chest-stitching - it almost always breaks/comes undone.
Disc closures – again, cheap metal – but easy to fix
Hardware straps - tend to break easily or come undone
The blanket itself seems okay quality for the price - it’s the hardware and stitching that in my experience is not so great.
Thanks Beowulf. My disc is not metal. It’s plastic! Is yours metal?
I know this was not to me, but mine have all been plastic. I’ve never seen a metal one.
Horsepoor, thanks for the photos as I was confused. I haven’t used the disc closure and not sure I would like it. I have mostly Rhino and Rambos. Guess I will need to stick with those going forward too.
I have it. Havent had issues with it. I would rather have the snaps but I figured I would give it a shot.
I got a cooler/drying sheet/possible stable sheet thing with one. First clue on the disc being fragile is that it came with 2. For the use of this sheet, I am fine with the disc. It’s lighter weight so doesn’t sag. But it’s also not on the horse very much and definitely not in turnout. The fit is nice, though. Good idea, but horses are good at breaking stuff.
I don’t have any but one of my boarders does. I saw it on a YouTube video before I saw it in person and all I could think of is what a pain in the ass it would be to deal with when wearing gloves. I live in Canada, there are MONTHS at a time that I am trying to do everything while wearing gloves and there is no way you are neatly feeding the straps through that plastic disc successfully in poofy gloves. With a little dexterity and practice, I CAN manage snaps with gloves most of the time.
I will watch to see how tough the blanket is on my boarder’s horse. I generally purchase Rambos as they are better quality. Another person at my farm bought a brand-new Amigo, one of the new ones designed to fit larger, bigger chested horses, and he blew out the front closures (the hook and eye type) in 12 hours. Not that impressed by the quality of Amigos overall.
