Anyone with a desk job in the horse industry?

If anyone here has a desk job related to any sort of equine industry, I’d love to hear about it! I’m especially curious to know if you feel the horse aspect truly contributes to your enjoyment of the job, or if it feels like any other desk job.

I’ve been dissatisfied with my own corporate career and am vaguely wondering if something horse-adjacent might at least be more engaging. Lots of factors of course, but I figure an open mind wont hurt at this stage.

Thanks!

I did paperwork for a veterinary practice for years. Certainly more interesting than the same job for a non-animal business! Many large barns and professional schools and groups ( horse shows, farriers, vets) need someone to handle accounts payable/receivable, ordering, schedules, entries etc.

Some careers I know of:
Equine insurance. I know some people get to travel for this job to horse shows so that’s fun.

Office staff at equine businesses. Smartpak, Dover, state line, Rambo, saddle companies, etc. depending on what you do it may be not very horse related at all (I can’t imagine the IT department is much different than any other IT department) BUT since the employees are horsey people I bet they are much more accommodating on being able to ride when it’s light out and go to horse shows and stuff.

Horse show employees. Shows like WEC and WEF have permanent office staff and are ran like any business.

When I retire, I told my vet clinic I’m going to come work there part time. It doesn’t pay as much as my current job in insurance but sounds a hell of a lot more engaging. Health benefits and other benefits of my job are paramount right now, but some day when I don’t need to "earn a living " I can’t wait to do something more interesting!

If you are interested in the Thoroughbred industry, consider race track management jobs, or client contact, stallion booking and clerical, and research/public relations positions at larger Thoroughbred farms, various office and clerical positions at Keeneland, Fasig Tipton or Ocala Breeders Sales companies.

No time off during breeding and foaling season or around the sales, and racing dates at racetracks, but in my experience you are working with horse people who generally understand and will accommodate your schedule when they can.
