OMG they are HORRIBLE this year! Is there anything I can do to reduce them?
No Natz spray and a gnat hat for yourself. That’s the only thing I’ve ever found to work on them.
Absorbine-- have to reapply frequently, but it’s really effective.
Move somewhere where there are no gnats. No idea where that is, but when you find it, let me know. I’m going to move there, too.
They are just horrible here right now. I can’t remember if they were this bad last year, but there are just clouds of them.
I have tried following methods and these work like a charm:
- We have used UV Light Bug Zappers and they work superbly against gnats.
- We have also used IGR’s against them and they awesome to reduce the further growth of gnats.
- Gnats hate the smell of Lavender, Vanilla , Citronella oil , Lemon Oil so you could use them for keeping gnats away.
I have come across an excellent webpage that enlists some other methods: 30 Ways to Get Rid of Gnats
saultgirl@ Did you get rid of gnats? If so, then how? This year, I am facing too much problem with gnats. Please share your personal experience which will work. Tell me how you get rid of those gnats. Will it work if i use a good flea bomb like this?
Fly mask with ears and nose, sunglasses, and a bandanna covering your ears and possibly also your nose. MUCH less stressful when they aren’t flying into the worst places.
I use Nature’s Guide Cedar Oil in the run-in shed.

Lavender, vanilla or any other smells do not help at all. I tried everything. The only thing that seems to be helping now is Athemo Bug Zapper with UV Light but it’s too small and I will need at least 5-6 of those for such a space. Have you tried any sprays? Do they work? Thanks.
Skin so soft works great but it doesn’t seem to work for a long duration. Stalling in front of fans helps.
I often do chores at night with a headlamp. Red light does not attract gnats.
Take a big wide brimmed hat and add mosquito netting around it to protect your head. I heard someone had a bug fly inside their ear and ended up at the doctor’s trying to get it removed.
Gnats love calm days. When the wind picks up they are gone.
Since gnats love manure is their anything you could spray on the pile to stop them? I try to drag my pastures often but it doesn’t help that much.
That must’ve been a really bad year. There are a few out there now, but not nearly as bad as some years!
My biting gnats don’t seem to like the manure, so assume you’re talking about fungus gnats. Bti works well on those. You can get it in mosquito dunks or mosquito bits or in big bags. I make “tea” with a mosquito dunk in my backpack sprayer and have had very good results getting rid of fungus gnats with that. Also helps flies and biting gnats. I spray it where these things breed every few days. Won’t hurt your fly predators, if you use those.
