My poor little Harley cat has such bad acne outbreaks on her chin, there’s hardly any hair left when things are healing. ANyone had any success with treatment for feline acne? I just wish there was something I could do for her. :sigh:

Nope - mostly get fed out of disposable paper bowls. I hate to do dishes, and nasty cat dishes are the worst.
She does drink out of a kitty fountain that keeps the water moving constantly, that’s plastic, but her chin doesn’t touch the edges. Would that make a difference?
If the paper bowls are thrown away every day, that is fine. The waterdish maynot be the problem, but check to see the edges aren’t scratched and scuffed up, they harbour bacteria that way.
I’ve read that salicylic acid type cleansers are good, but you HAVE to get them from the vet, otherwise they are too strong/may cause serious damage.
Daily cleaning of the chin with warm. Water and a bit of kitty shampoo is suppposed to help.
Does kitty have white fur on the chin? That is suosed to be most susepptable.

For Tally I had to scrub her chin with warm water and something the vet prescribed. Vet said to scrub firmly enough to break the scabs.
Poor kitty really hated it but it did clean up. It reappears a little bit now and again but nothing like the crusty lizard chin of doom.

This! For my acne prone kid, its the only thing that works. Even using the plastic water with the flowing water makes him break out.

I would be careful with some human products, especially in that region.
Many contain salicylic acid, which is the active byproduct of aspirin metabolism, and aspirin can be toxic to kitties in higher doses.
I’m not sure if the use of these human products has ever been studied in cats (the presumed toxicity potential is just a hypothesis based on my pharm class), but IMHO not worth the risk without first discussing with your vet!
Feline acne may be an allergic response so even tho the paper dishes are always clean or kitty’s chin doesn’t touch the plastic water dish, this can be sufficient to trigger an allergy; try switching to glass/ceramic dishes.
I remember babysitting a cat with it and I had to give it antibiotics… banana flavour liquid at that :S That went over well! Two person job with work gloves on who ever was holding the cat.

My vet has me use a 1:1 Betadine and water solution on Gizmo whenever he starts to get little pimples. Clears things up without them becoming huge and painful blackheads.
I was thinking about this and realized I was wrong. It’s not SA, it’s Benzoyl Peroxide.
SALICYLIC ACID is TOXIC to cats!!!

one more vote for metal bowls. Simple stainless steel ones, wash very frequently. Saving grace for my very susceptible girl cat. I also like to use a super warm, wet washcloth to gently clean her chin regularly (when it’s not broken out).
For her, as well, switching to grain free higher quality food has helped - better quality ingredients and oils and such.
One shot of depo-medrol cleared up acne in my prone cat for … ever? It’s never returned, and it’s been several years.
I have found that using a plate (ceramic in my case) rather than a bowl prevented breakouts of kitty acne.
Acne?! Who knew.
My vet said it was allergies. And it does only appear in the summer, gets all clear in the winter.
I’d switch to non-grain cat food.
My cats have paper plates and for water, a very large glass mixing bowl- nothing cleans up squeaky clean like glass (or pyrex ).
My horse’s eyes weep in the summer and he breathes heavily in the summer, I definitely think he has allergies.
One of our cats get them. Vet said that it was not acne but rodent ulcers and we treat them with a short dose of prednisone. They tend to recur sporadically with some cats. In fact we just noticed today that he has them again for the first time in months.
He has a white chin. Wonder if they are more susceptible?
My cat had the WORST acne when I got her from the shelter. My vet said to change from plastic bowls and she gave me a benzoyl peroxide (?) cream (exactly like the cream I have for myself :rolleyes:) and told me to wash her chin daily with a mild soap and then apply the cream.
She hated it. It cleared up most of her acne. She still has a tiny bit, but its not bad. She does have a white little chin, so that is probably part of it. She also has some sort of allergy to lower quality foods, so I changed her to a grain free ($$$) cat food which probably has helped on both fronts.
