APF Pro for Cushing's horse?

My retiree (24 y/o gelding) is moving to a new barn next week and I would like to put significant weight on him if possible. He has always been a hard keeper TB but I started having real issues when he went on Prascend in spring 2023 with a resulting loss of appetite. There are a lot of recommendations on this forum for APF Pro but it isn’t clear to me what exactly it does to help? If I’m reading the dosage instructions correctly it would be $193 for about 50 days’ worth so … is it worth it?

My 26 year old was diagnosed with PPID during the spring. The Prascend turned him into a zombie with no appetite, and APF was one of the things I tried. In short term, we thought it was maybe helping some, but not enough to continue using it past the first month or so.

Purina RepliniMash helped tempt him to eat – I made it up with Guinness, not water. Took about two months to get him past the zombie stage, up to his full dose of Prascend, and eating fairly consistently. No longer need to feed the mash, nor the Guinness.

Other thing that seemed to help was the Santa Cruz Appetite supplement, enough that we re-ordered it in the larger size. No longer need to add this to his meals, either:

Best wishes for your old boy.

Thanks for sharing, that looks like a great (and more cost-effective) thing to try!

The move will be an overall upgrade in hay and feed quality (current barn feeds Triumph Fiber Plus and new one feeds Tribute Synergize) so I hope that’s half the battle won already.
