Appaloosa sport horses

I recently started riding again after a 10+ year hiatus and am starting to think about buying a horse. When I was younger I had a 6 year old Appaloosa out of the Executive and Comets Choice Bar. He was amazing - a beautiful mover and jumper with an awesome personality and did very well in hunter classes. I’ve looked on Equinenow for hunter/jumper Appys and googled Appaloosa sport horse breeders but I haven’t found a whole lot. Does anyone have a suggestion where to look? I suppose I could just ask my instructor but it’s fun to do some looking on my own!

No, but some posters here do - there was a line of appaloosas especially bred as sporthorses, beautiful horses, and the life’s work of a lady who has since died…WAP lines. (?) But there is another line with a similar name, so we have to rely on memories of people who had/have some of these horses and their offspring.

Better ask your trainer…

A Google search will give you lots of info on JD Appaloosas and the “other Appaloosas” and the difference.

It was Virginia Hood(?) JG Appaloosas who developed the WAP lines of Appaloosa Sport horses. They have enjoyed much success and are VERY nice horses. There was also a line of almost 100% Holsteiner, Appaloosa Sport horses a while back. I don’t know if that line still exists. We are breeding some nice ones as well using an Appaloosa stallion with no “modern” AQHA breeding on Warmblood mares. We are happy with the results and so are the buyers.

Other posters are more knowledgeable than me, but Wapuzzan has been producing some cute babies who I believe are beginning to show? Altamont Sport Horses is another one to look into- they do Knabs and App Sport Horses. I believe they stand a stallion named Hollywood’s Hot Spot who has been crossed to Wap mares.

Waps Finest is an up and coming stallion- might be smart to check in with his owners? Waps Limited Edition has some cute babies as well.

Rugby Creek breeds them too. Also check out Rivervale Farm.

I have an App Sport Horse myself… definitely biased and definitely a fan :). Good luck on your search!

I have an App mare that is by a Wap Spotted son out of a race bred Appaloosa. Nicest horse I’ve ever owned and I never liked Appaloosas very much before her! Not an upper level type but an honest lower level horse who takes care of her rider. I’m looking at breeding her to an Knabstrupper hoping to get a clone of my mare (with) hopeful a bit more ability. I think Knabs maybe the way to go for those of us looking for the App color in an English horse. The Wap lines are great but the rest of the breed (with a few exceptions, I’m sure) have pretty much become Western Quarter Horses with spots.

Oh I forgot they had an App that wasn’t Wap lines!

BJC Asher Seven is one of the few Appaloosa stallions in the US with virtually no AQHA blood. That is one of the reasons we purchased him. All the benefits of the Appy with none of the “issues” of the QH. At the time we found him we were trying to find a stallion or stallion prospect Knabstrupper. What we were looking for either wasn’t there or was a small fortune to buy.

Oh my gosh I didn’t even realize you posted before me… Asher is lovely!

A few years ago I was looking for an Appaloosa sport horse or a Knabstrupper for dressage. Yes, finding an Appaloosa with the gaits to be competitive in open shows is pretty much finding a needle in a haystack. The few that exist are often owned by fiercely loyal owners who have no interest in selling. And Knabstruppers are also quite rare here in the US.

For H/J JG Wap lines are a great place to start. Virgina and Jerry Hood are no longer breeding, but a few stallions from their breeding program and their progeny are around.

@elizan - you have gotten most of the Appaloosa sport breeders I know of - Rugby Creek’s Wapuzzan has put some nice babies on the ground and quite a few are under saddle and competing. Butterwap Confetti is another sport-type stallion, but the owner was getting out of the business the last I heard. Gateway Farms also stands an Appaloosa sport stallion, Blue Ghostwind.

One thing to keep in mind is Appaloosa registry doesn’t allow outcrosses to WB, so if registration is a factor, that will limit your options. There are some other, smaller registries that will take them however, and I believe you can get a performance certificate through ApHC for geldings to show ApHC shows.

@Miichelle - FYI - the KNN (the Knabstrupper registry) no longer allows crosses to Appaloosas. If you were to cross your mare to a Knab stallion, the foal would not be eligible for KNN registration, or Appaloosa registration either, as noted above. I am not sure if you are even interested in registration, but better to have all the information going in.

For HJ movement + spots, Waps Rolls Royce and Wapuzzan, though I think the latter has a better canter than trot.

I wish the ‘See Related Threads’ was still around because there was a stallion @Nootka showed me that I cannot for the life of me remember, but he was really nice – Elliot was his name, I think? But IIRC, he was a knabstrupper – I know. totally different breed, but if you want spots and good movement at the same time that’s one of the better places to start. Nootka has a really nice knab colt too, maybe she’ll chime in?

This guy looks promising, but again, not full appy:

Geldings and spayed mares that are colored can be fully registered through the hardship clause with the Appaloosa Horse Club making them “showable” in ApHC events. We have registered several geldings by BJC Asher Seven out of Warmblood mares. The ApHC has been helpful to work with.

Thank you so much everyone!!

Has Waps Finest been mentioned? https://www.facebook.com/WapsFinest/ They might have some offspring for sale.

@beowulf - Lindegaard’s Elliot (your memory is correct - he is a Knabstrupper) is standing in Canada. He is young, so probably no foals on the ground yet.

There’s Honkytonk Wrangler - http://www.avalonappaloosas.com/stallions.htm. As far as I know, he himself was only shown as a youngster on the app circuit but his babies look like they could do more than that. He’s got TB on his dam’s side and some good old fashioned app bloodlines on top. The Sunbeach Honkytonk lines are really late bloomers - I own a full brother who is eight this year and I feel like it’s taken him until the last year or so to really mature and grow up mentally but his personality is fantastic and he’s really athletic. And because Wrangler is homozygous, he is a 100% color producer.

Sharing my girl too (summer vs. winter coat colours haha). Hanoverian x App cross… looks like she’ll finish a solid 16.2 :). They are definitely out there!

Oh yeah, forgot about him. For a while there it looked like they were going to go more of a western route with him. He looks really good going english, will be interesting to see how his babies turn out.
