Hello All!
We are appaloosa enthusiast but want to see quality conformation, movement and athletic ability along with the color…anyone else out there have or breeding for the same?
silly, all Appaloosas are sport horses.
(big fan here, I have four of them. not a breeder, just a rider.)
We don’t actively breed for color, but I do have a great little Appy mare (novice eventing) that we bred to my Pinto RPSI stallion last year… the foal is a leggy, uphill, pintaloosa colt with great movement!
I am breeding her back to the same stallion next year, and am excited to see what I get.

Mood Indigo is a 16’3" Rangerbred out of West Virginia, 1500# if he’s an ounce and everybody thinks he’s a warmblood. He ALWAYS outjumps even our best thoroughbreds, winning our bareback puissance competition at 5’3" and ready to go higher. He’s evented through Preliminary:

Spot Treatment is our star at 15’0"; he’s a grade 3 event horse, competed through Preliminary, and has one CIC* and one CCI* under his belt. He’s the fanciest jumper I’ve ever seen. He and Megan were featured in the February, 2007, edition of the Appaloosa Journal:

And you certainly remember Wap’s Rocky Road – bred by you, by your stallion Wapuzzan out of a TB mare. “Jerry” is now 2, pushing 16 hands and showing signs of fabulous movement. These pictures are a little blurry due to the light, but I think you can see the quality; growing up on an eastern Kentucky hillside has given him rock hard feet and fabulous co-ordination and balance:

Our last boy is a homozygous yearling, full Appaloosa, out of Kansas. Picasso is more quarter horse type (look at that hip!) but holds his own on the hills and terrain. He’s particularly fond of the water in our paddocks!

We might even have colored Trakehners in the future – we have a 4-year old Anglo-Trakehner colt by Windfall who we bred and raised. We’ve test bred “Nightfall” and will be evaluating his get next year. Nightfall is eventing successfully at Novice, and won the 4-year old Young Event Horse class at Maui Jim in Chicago.
I am expecting my first foal in May of '09 out of my ApHCC mare. This is her first as well, and I’m suuuper excited to see what she produces.

The sire is a 16.3 Thoroughbred (sired by Fappiano) who recently came off the track. Very mellow and just lovely to work with.

Wow! “Kool-I” is really cool! I particularly like his neck. Maybe an overo gene in there someplace with the blue eye and white?
Well…I only have two appaloosa pattern Colonial Spanish horses now…a snowflake mare and her snowflake colt (Choctaw Twister) but this little cutie is coming in the Fall when he’s weaned. He’s a registered Spanish Mustang/Barb (strain) black blanket appy. He’s probably as close to the Nez Perce ponies as you will get today in type and breed and I’m told he’s one heck of a jumper already! He is a stallion prospect and is bred to the nines.

I have loved Appaloosas ever since I started riding. I now have a lovely 6 year old Appaloosa/Hanoverian cross mare.
Her sire is Chelsea’s Ghost, a fewspot foundation ApHC and her dam is a Hanoverian mare by Walter Scott out of a TB mare. I once knew her TB lines, but have lost them. So technically she’s 1/2 appaloosa, 1/4 Hanoverian, and 1/4 Thoroughbred.
I bought her as a dressage and eventing prospect, however I was unable to ride just 2 months after I bought her because of my health problems. So the last two years have been spent trying to get started in Carriage Driving. Lack of money, time, and knowledge resources have definitely delayed my efforts. This summer everything came together so Fancy should be in harness by November.
I took her to a clinic with Larry Brinker, an Advanced level CDE competitor, who absolutely loved her. He told me she has everything needed for an Advanced level CDE horse, gaits, temperament, endurance, brains and talent. He said that she’ll make Advanced, without a doubt. So, we’re trying to go slow and not screw her up. My goal is to have her ready to campaign in 2013 and 2014 in Advanced for a spot on the Worlds Single team.
If she’s successful, I’m planning to breed her with a Hanoverian, Appaloosa or Knabstruper for another CDE prospect.
The only photos I have of her are when I got her when she was 4 years old. She’s a slow maturing gal, she’s grown 3 inches since I bought her. And she looked like she was 2 when she was 4, so now she’s finally looking like a horse, and not a filly.

These are from her only dressage show. A western pleasure friend of mine rode her for me (I already couldn’t ride). They did well considering EVERYTHING went wrong, both scores in the low 60’s.

I ADORE APPALOOSAS! My once in a lifetime was an appaloosa. Boy he could jump the moon! He was seriously the WORLD’S GREATEST. tears Oh how I miss him…
App - blue eyes and large white?
Yeah - we were totally surprised as Kool-i popped out with a blue eye! You can trace his sire/dam back to the 1600’s I believe…and all App/TB or QH (way back) etc…so just some sort of thro-back gene I guess.
Any other research or opinions to know more about the blue eye and large white cropping out on apppaloosas?
I would love to see more Appaloosa Sporthorses competing in CDE and have serious interest in it myself! It will be great to watch your mare grow and improve - keep us posted and good luck in your dream to reach the worlds competition that would be awesome!

I don’t know of an official research into the overo traits some Appaloosas have, but I do know that many of them go back to a stallion named Bright Eyes Brother. He had a large blanket, stockings, and bald face and blue eyes. My own horse, Stretch, is a grandson. He is sorrel with a blanket, stockings past his hocks in back, spotted front legs, and a bald face. His eyes are brown. He’s also over 16.2, so he stands out in a crowd! 
I just love him.

I love my App Sport Horses. I have been breeding and showing them for over 20 years.
My Senior stallion “Chocklate Confetti” Is the most incredable and willing animal on earth.
He is a young 26 year old guy. Chocklate is very foundation bred and looks and moves like a Spotted Warmblood and has been assumed to be a Knabbie for years. Chocklate has competed in All sporthorse disiplines and also a little western and Halter in his youth.
He passes all of his great qualities to his babies. I just got back from a RPSI inspection with his daughter “Butterscotch Confetti” and the judge loved her, he was amazed of her great condition for an 18 year old pregnant mare. I have her son “Butterwap Confetti”
“aka” Oreo That I also stand at stud, he is also an incredable animal and is a black and white homozygous guy. Small brag…I took a filly by him in Aug to the USDF breeders qualifier
in Burbank and she won the 08 fillies class. Her name is “Graced with Chocklate” and she is out of a Oldenburg mare by the name of Grace. Another Oreo gelding won hus USDF show in Illinois also. I could go on forever about my Apps. They are wonderfull athletes and will jump off the earth for you if you treat them with care and respect. Plus they will stay sound forever.

Hi Ann
Unfortunately Oreo is just a fat and happy stallion. I have been in the hospital twice this year and the last time just about killed me, had an allergic reaction to 2 of my new COPD meds. So to make the story short, I had to have a loop monitor implanted in my chest to keep an eye on my heart and to help the Doc decide if I need a pacer or not a week ago…Boy I am sore!
I have not been on a horse since May, but things were getting pretty critical during the summer but I am feeling better finally. So I hope to ride in 2 weeks, Although I am not looking forward to the bouncing. Enough about that…
I hope to get Oreo going soon, he is such a sweet guy, and his babies are incredible.
I spoke with Earnie and Otto at the RPSI inspection and took pedigree’s and show photo’s of all of my horses, they loved them. We talked about my options for Oreo and RPSI and I am still a bit confused.
I have a 3 yr old by Wakona Dutch Chocklate who is by Chocklate Confetti. He is huge, stunning, and probably one of the smartest horses around. He is so sensible that I can just hop on him after not doing anything for a week and just go out for a ride. Such a good baby! :yes:
Yep… love the spott is a year and a half old now, and a such a doll. VERY people oriented, every one at the barn loves her.

And my appaloosa love affair started with my first horse, a green, 5 year old appy who took me from walk trot, D1 pony club to prelim level eventing. He was a one in a life time.
