Appaloosa Sporthorses-any others out there?

Kathy–I HAVE looked into Knabs. and researched and talked to Melanie extensively. Her Cita Newmark (I think) has has the movement I would like to get, and is by Ecuador, I think.

I have been watching Colorado and watched the stallion testing. The new videos on your site are helpful.

My issue with a lot of them is size and the same movement issue. 15.3 is too small for me and I need to add on size, and the movement of Colorado I see is not what I would look for in an upper level horse. It’s the same thing with the openness of the shoulder. I think they are very similar to the older sport Appies, even though bred differently, in that they add brains, soundness, and determination.

And since none of Colorado’s offspring are old enough to see “adult” movement, it’s hard to know what he passes on in his babies.

I think there are lots of options for Appies/Knabs to produce good sporthorses that can jump (they can ALL jump) and be lower level dressage. It’s the upper level I’m looking for. I’m looking for a stallion that can keep that ability to piaffe/passage, do the quick tempi changes, and actually HAVE an extended trot.

So, again, if I breed to Colorado, I’d probably get colored out of a solid mare, but would I keep the movement of the mare, and improve it? (I’m sure the jump would improve. My mare doesn’t understand what “jumping” is, and it’s good I don’t care.)

Does anyone know if Zanco ever stood at stud…or has any frozen semen, He passed away a few years ago.

I am new to this forum and I’m not sure if bringing back old threads is frowned upon but I wanted to add to it since I’m a huge Appy, Appy cross and Knabstrupper fan (I also love warmbloods).

I don’t breed but I own an Appaloosa/Thoroughbred mare that I do dressage with. She is 7 years old and due to a string of injuries she’s sustained (plus my own circumstances) this year was our first year showing.

We did fairly well considering she has a fused hock after breaking it climbing over a shelter wall. She’s also had a pelvic injury from who knows what? Maybe being an boisterous youngster (injury occured at 3 yrs old).

I would like to get her going more consistently (I just can’t ride as often as I like at the moment) and see how far along in our dressage we can get. We’re also doing western dressage for fun!

This is her at our first show this year:

I’ve toying with the idea of breeding her for another project horse for myself and have looked up every Appy, Appy cross and Knabstrupper I could find. I’m certainly not opposed to buying a foal from one these studs either.

I do have a strong interest in producing more Appaloosas for the english show ring, though. I very much like what I see in the UK, South Africa and Australia. Those are Apps are definitely not the stocky QH-types we have over here!

My friend and I recently purchased an Appaloosa stallion to use for our tiny-scale project but we’ve since gelded and are training him to resell… though we love him so much, we may end up keeping him!

Here is when he first arrived:

I always love to keep updated on everything Appaloosa and I enjoy meeting others who love “Appytude”

I would suggest you might want to talk to Blackshire Equestrian www.blackshire equestrian.com they atarted as Appaloosa breeders and then ended up in Friesians. So they understand color very well. The Friesian stallion they are using now…Hessel…has had some incredible babies on these stock type Appaloosa mares. So they have accumulated a number of homozygous mares and cross them on Hessel. Buying this way you see you like you buy…any time you can select from a foal you save yourself the question of whether you get color and whether you like the color you get. This year there was a stunning black leopard filly that of course everyone wanted. http://www.horseclicks.com/2012_leopard_spotted_friesian_sporthorse_filly_sol/advert/179478 She was sold in the first month so you need to be ready to make a decision and buy when they arrive. Starting with a solid mare…to get the color you want and the movement you want…I think you would be far far better of to find the farms and mares likely to produce your horse and be ready to buy when they are foaled…good luck to you. Me…I want golden palomino…with 4 white and the blaze and the free shoulder and great movement…lovely temperament…not dirty palomino…not isabel…not stock type but dressage type…I looked and looked for a mare to breed but you need to be ready to buy the individual…save your money and get ready to play.

i do. my guy is a dutch wb x with an appy. atleast i consider him an appaloosa sporthorse.
a great cross imo.
the color ,confo and sweet temp of my mare and the height ,confo, novement, color of the sire made a wonderful offspring that i could ever hope for.

Welcome Vintage! Nice mare. Sure looks like you gave the stallion an upgrade. Here is a good page to look at, if you haven’t already:

We have a super filly by our stud out of a appy mare. When her dam was present to the BWP for inspection this year her filly’s movement received gasps from the audience with comments of, “did you seee that foal trot!” We were also asked if she was being presented. They couldn’t tell that she was by a QH stud and not a WB. Unfortunately she didn’t get her dam’s spots but she did get her sire’s silver dilution gene. She is believed to be the only confirmed silver appaloosa.

If I still own her when she is old enough to breed she will be bred to a fantastic Appy or a WB.

Her dam is currently in foal to a Oldenburg stallion for 2009.

Since this thread has been brought back again, I wanted to update with information about our filly/mare. We have change our user name and are now Safyre Sporthorses.

In August 2012 our bay silver ApHC mare, Khepri, was presented to ISR/OLD for breeding approval where she earned 105 pts - a premium score. http://www.safyresporthorses.com/khepri.html

She also has had some very small white spots since she was 2 but not enough characteristics to get regular papers. I sent her hair in for testing last week. Hopefully we will have an answer this week.

Just a correction for the sake of accuracy, Cita Normark is by Ravaldi out of a Danish Oldenburg mare called Stella Normark.

There are Knabs that are big, I have a gelding, by Ravaldi out of an Oldenburg as it happens, who is almost 17hh and who moves really well. He was 5th in the 3 yr old geldings at DAD and 4th in the 3 yr old Materiale, so he can hold his own in an open class.

Don’t dismiss the Knabs because they are not as flashy a mover as some WB’s, they more than make up for it with their superb temperaments and trainability.

Colorado is a really good stallion, don’t dismiss him!

MW

Well, I’m not dismissing Colorado. I bid on the auction to help Edo and won a breeding to him, so I guess we’ll see. My mare is super, but a PIA, so hopefully the combination will work, with spots! Hopefully we’ll also get bigger, as she is only 15.3. We’ll see in about a year and a half!

^^ Exciting! Please update us in a year or so with progress reports!

Wondering if someone can help me out here.f
I’ve always been a lover of the app colouring but couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. Well… that’s untrue, i found one in South Africa… go figure.

On that note, I’ve found a really lovely appaloosa registered snowcap mare, very much a hunter type and one that I would breed regardless of what colour she was. If I were to breed her to a warmblood (I’m looking at a few, but lets just say I decided to use Escudo I) what are the options for registering the foal?

Ssporthorses, you could register your resulting foal with the Appaloosa Sport Horse Association.

It is not a recognized outcross of the Appaloosa Horses Club, so you could not register a mare or stallion with them. If gelded or spayed the resulting foal, it would be issued papers, as long as the dam has ApHC papers. If you want to register with the ApHC, you could breed to an Appaloosa, QH, TB or Arabian stallion, (same rules apply) as long as your mare has ApHC papers. If the dam is not registered, but the get has color and is gelded or spayed, the ApHC will issue papers under the hardship clause.

I am not an expert on this, but from what I understand, WB registries would inspect your mare and / or foal. It would be at their discression to approve or not approve them. If approved, they would probably be entered into the lower or appendix book of the organization. For the mare and possibly the foal, some organizations require yearly fees to keep the approval active.

Which South African horse interests you? Many of then have been bred here in the states and have been exported in the past decade or so.

THanks for the info! I was wondering if the mare and resulting foal could be inspected into a lower book of a WB registry… She really is nice enough.

The colt I saw was a bay with a blanket and lightening marks on his legs, he was by Balou du Rouet (who I would likely be using with this mare)

His suffix on his name was Cayuse… can’t recall his whole name now but the breeder appeared to be in South Africa

I googled him. The breeder is in New South Wales, Austrailia, not South Africa. He is a flashy colt.

Whoops… I knew it was far away. LOL

Yup, if I could get one like that I would be pleased as punch! My #1 KWPN broodmare is grey though so my brief idea of using a snowcap or fewspot stallion I decided was not the ideal way to get my colourful foal. I’d be very sad if it came out flashy and then turned grey

Awaiting New Colored Mare

I’m an appaloosa lover, but normally a lurker on Coth. I grew up showing on the ApHC circuit, but veered off into Hunter/Jumper land (tinkering elsewhere also) with my Appaloosas about 5 plus years ago. Absolutely love appaloosa sport horses!

I am excitedly awaiting a newly purchased mare to ship home. I believe the mare will excel in sport and will be a fun hunter/jumper prospect that I can maybe dabble in dressage and some hunting with. If she does prove herself in sport, then I may breed her later down the road to produce another appaloosa sport horse.

She is 15.3 bay based mare that I guess would be considered snowcap? There’s a lot of white there lol. Here is her pedigree.
Here is a trot pic. I can’t wait to get her home, in shape, and get her training underway.

VERY nice, spot! Love her looks.

thank you! now just the hard part of waiting for her to ship home, lol although that gives free time to drool over stallions. The more I think about her future prospects, the more excited I get
