Appendix Quarter Horses
Just got a text back from my mom, the horse is registered under the AQHA as an Appendix.

Can a horse (say appendix x TB) be called an appendix even though it isn’t registered? Or does it matter. Are there only specific rules for registered horses?
People informally call any TB/QH cross an Appendix; percentage doesn’t seem to matter. So yes, lots of people use that term to mean any TB/QH cross.

I remember as a young person thinking that “appendix” was an odd name for a type of horse. I learned later that they are called that because AQHA has an “appendix” to their regular registry for these QH/TB crosses. The registration papers are even a different color from the regular ones. Horses in the appendix registry can “earn” their regular papers through performance. That’s why a horse with enough AQHA show or racing points is called a regular QH even though he may have a ton of TB blood. It is confusing.

Edit: I now realize that all this information was in the the link to the article someone posted early in the thread. Sorry.

Everyone calls any TB/QH cross an Appendix which I find annoying. My beloved Bob was a registered Appendix. Full Jockey Club registered TB on top, full AQHA registered on bottom.

I have an Apaintdix
He is a registered paint but dam is full TB. Lovely horse.
I’m so stealing this for my mare

She’s a breeding stock (now called Solid Paint Bred I believe) and looks nothing like a paint!

IMO an appendix is a TB crossed with a stock horse.

I had one (APHA x TB) registered with AAHA (appendix registry). She’s solid but eligible for APHA papers.

I agree with you, but a hardcore AQHA person probably would not… I think (do not know for 100% fact but am pretty sure) that the AQHA started the Appendix thing and the other registries are an offshoot. So we’re kind of taking their term and applying it in other places.

This comes from conversations where I’ve called my mare an Appendix to an AQHA person and they decided I needed to be corrected.

Here’s one article that might help

I’m not even an AQHA person, let alone hardcore, but I don’t agree. An Appendix is a specific thing - a horse registered with AQHA in their Appendix registry. It’s not a generic term that means “a QH-Thoroughbred cross.”

If his registry number doesn’t start with an “X,” he’s not an appendix.
That makes so much sense! I just found his papers and sure enough there is an x in front of his number. It even says “appendix code” above it. Haha
Turns out you learn things if you pay attention!

Straight from the 2015 AQHA Rulebook:

Except as otherwise limited on proper compliance with the rules and regulations of AQHA, a stallion, mare, gelding or spayed mare that has one parent with an AQHA number and the other parent registered in the Appendix, The Jockey Club of North America or any Thoroughbred registry recognized by The Jockey Club of North America may be listed in the Appendix.

So one parent has to be have an AQHA number. The other has to be in the Appendix or registered with the Jockey Club or JC recognized.
