Approving a TB Mare

We just completed breeding my Thoroughbred mare with frozen from Reputed Testamony (TB) and now I am on the 2 week wait period. In the meanwhile, I have a couple of questions and am looking for advice on how to proceed with approval and registration.
• What registry should I attempt to approve the mare with? (I am most interested in breeding for hunter/jumpers and was not sure if discipline preference pushes breeders towards certain registries with TB mares.)
  • The mare is JC registered. However, since this was frozen, I won't be able to register the foal as JC. Are there any other options?
• I don’t think he is approved for any warmblood books, otherwise I would say go for whatever he is approved for. I’m not sure if any registry will register the offspring from a non-approved stallion, but ISR/ONA or American Warmblood would probably be your best bet. You wouldn’t get full papers from the European registries, but you might be able to get a COP if the mare was approved.

I really don’t want to sound rude or mean, but that is something you should have considered before breeding her if papers are important to you.

I don’t know that any registry will give you papers given that he not only was not approved by any registry, he is deceased and I’m guessing you bought the semen from UNH and you won’t be getting any kind of breeding certificate. I would •assume• that there is DNA on him somewhere (JC, would be where I would start).

You might get able to get papers from PHR, but you are going to have to prove who the sire with any registry.

    Good luck

In the event, she isn’t pregnant or you breed her again next year, typically people do one of two things. Find a registry you want to work with (based on customer service, nearby inspections, lots of horses in discipline, etc) and have her inspected for that registry and then use stallions that are approved by registry (or if registry allows outside stallions to be used, you can do that) or find the stallion(s) you want to breed and have her inspected by a registry he’s approved by (this method may result in having to get multiple mare approvals over the the years).

I guess there is a 3rd option that some people to…say “you don’t ride papers” and just breed to whatever stallion you want to and don’t get papers.

Some registries are easier to get TB mares approved with. RPSI and ISR/OldNA are both known to be TB friendly. AHS is probably the most difficult to a TB mare into. The others are open to good quality mares.

    Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for the info, it does help. I should have clarified in my OP that papers are not critical to me, especially with this particular breeding. I have been enamored with Rep for a decade and finally have the right mare (actually two) and the finances to pursue breeding and raising foals. I am of the opinion that “you don’t ride papers” especially in the hunter/jumpers. Papers would just be a bonus and if there is a possibility of registration, I would like to pursue it. I know very little about how the registries work; so I appreciate the advice from people who do have the knowledge. I did purchase the semen through UNH. The insemination was completed by an equine hospital. I’ll start checking with PHR as well as ISR/OldNA.

With regards to approving the mare, you can try any of the registries. She’ll likely be approved, because many thoroughbred mares, good or bad, who are presented are approved.

With regards to this breeding, I’m sure you are aware the foal will not be eligible for any registry which both stallion and mare are not approved for breeding.

This foal will likely be eligible only for Performance Horse registry.
