AQHA English Special Events - Updates

Some updates for the upcoming AQHA English Special Events (starting in 2020) , and an opportunity for young hunter-type Quarter Horses:

  1. AQHA has approved a High Point American Quarter Horse award for the Sallie B Wheeler Hunter Breeding National Championships, both East (Virginia Horse Center) and West (Del Mar Showpark) in mid-late August. This is a USEF/USHJA show. Yearling, 2 and 3 year old horses can compete on the line for this award. If you have a nice young Appendix or regular registry Quarter Horse, give it some thought. To be eligible for all the different breed awards, entries have to be in for registrations to be verified by August 5.

  2. Answer to the question of combining an AQHA English Special Event with a USEF/USHJA rated show:
There are two options per the USEF Director of Competition Licensing, Evaluation & Safety. A separate entry blank is mandatory (and easier) for all options, and an AQHA regular or Specialized OF carded judge is required (currently 14 are dual carded AQHA OF/USEF R).
    A) AQHA classes run concurrently with USEF, USHJA or Opportunity classes, with a double entry option… For each round, the judge marks both USEF and AQHA cards. The AQHA exhibitors will need to either already be competing members of both USEF and USHJA, or pay both Show Pass fees, horse recording, USEF/USHJA Drug fees plus show admin, stall or trailer in fee. AQHA exhibitors judged concurrently with USEF administered classes must also have taken Safe Sport training. AQHA entries and fees would be additional. Only the number of AQHA horses in the class would count for points.
    B) AQHA English Special Event classes as a separate show, running alongside, but not as part of, the USEF/USHJA rated show with separately judged classes. It does not matter if the AQHA classes are held in the same or different arenas, or judged by the same person. The AQHA exhibitors, showing only in AQHA classes, would be exempt from USEF/USHJA membership fees, drug fees, horse recording fees, etc., and Safe Sport training. They would pay stall/haul-in and general show admin fees, plus AQHA fees and entries.

It is currently the general opinion that an AQHA English Special Event is best combined with a non-rated state association or schooling show to draw the widest group of exhibitors, at the lowest cost to show.

  1. USEF “R” judges can now obtain their AQHA Specialized Over Fences judges card with only the standard application and fee, no testing. USEF 'r" judges must additionally submit a resume of shows they have judged. https://www.aqha.com/become-a-judge

Interesting. So for A and B, do both options require a judge with the AQHA Over Fences card? Or does the USEF judge just mark both cards for the same trip for the AQHA entry?

Must have an AQHA card. I will edit, There are currently 14 AQHA Specialized OF judges with USEF “R” cards. Including you !

That’s why I was curious. Thanks!

Hi @MHM : thanks for going the extra mile to be able to judge those events! I grew up in an area with lots of QH and think it is awesome that AQHA is working to up the quality of judging and get more QH into the H/J rings.

This is awesome news! So glad that steps are being taken to reward QH’s in the H/J rings

I enjoy it! It’s always fun to go to different places. And I have seen some very nice horses over the years at the AQHA shows! Many of them could be competitive at any horse show.
