AQHA general question

Hello,
Back in March I purchased a registered QH. I have his registration papers in hand, and I want to have them transferred into my name (even though I have a bill of sale) and the AQHA site is not very helpful.
Do I need to pay for a membership in order to have the papers transferred?

Also, I want to check my boys history, specifically if he was ever used as a stud (I got him at 15 and the seller wasn’t sure about his past), and if he has a show record or not.
Would I need to go through AQHA for this as well?

All for personal curiosity more than anything, but it would be neat to find out.

Any help would be welcomed!!
his name is A Peppy Chex Olena, from Ohio
I was told he has good breeding, but i am not a QH buff so wouldn’t know a good line from a bad one lol

I know about the paper transfer because I did it fairly recently. But I can’t answer your other questions.

Yes, you do have to pay for membership to have the papers transferred. But, if you don’t care to be involved in anything AQHA, you can just not renew it and let it lapse.

This is the form:

https://aqha.com/media/3130/transfer-report-12-2-14.pdf

I was able to get the seller to fill out and sign her portion of the form because we were both still riding at the same place at the time. I’m not sure how you do it if you just have a bill of sale.

Well the seller isn’t even the one listed on the papers as the last person to own him, so even if I did go back to her, it wouldn’t be much help :frowning:

Fun

The registration papers alone don’t mean much, you need a transfer report from the last owner of record, the one listed on the registration paper as the owner.

With both of them, you can register him in your name.

If you don’t have a properly signed transfer report, that determines that is the right horse as per the seller, you need to contact the AQHA and they will send a notice to the last owner of record and see what they answer.

If that last recorded owner is nice, they will send the signed forms and the AQHA will proceed with getting the horse in your name.

Googling his name, this is what I got, his pedigree and some videos:

Looks like he was shown some in western pleasure, reining, barrel racing and pole bending in 2007?

If you contact the AQHA they could probably help you out with the registration process if you are unsure how to proceed. You should contact the person you purchased from to see if they have a transfer report from the person who they purchased him from (hopefully that is the last owner on the AQHA record). From my understanding you can do multiple transfers at once (so basically updating all the owners from the last noted until you) but it’s a lot smoother if there is some paperwork on hand.

As far as checking out his history, when you’re a member you get $10 in free records searches per month, so you can look up his registered name and quickly find show records, if there are any registered foals linked to him, etc. Hope that helps!

I don’t think you get any more free record checks, you have to pay for them now.

Oh really? That’s unfortunate! I wonder when they changed it- I can’t remember when I last used it but seems like it was earlier this year. I always thought that was a great member perk!

Call them. The office staff is wonderful

I still get $10 in free look ups per month. I don’t think that has changed.

each search costs an amount… say… 2.00, but you get 10.00 to spend every month for free…

As everyone said you need the signed transfer report from the owner of record on the papers as well as needing a copy of the papers to send back to the AQHA to make the transfer. You don’t need to be a member to register a horse but there is a surcharge for non-member which I think is close to the membership cost. Its easier to just sign up for a year.

As far as the records go, you get 10 dollars in free searches a month. And the cost depends on the type of search. Ownership is only a dollars, Performance is $3 dollars and the spendy ones are the breeding reports.

www.allbreedpedigree.com is a good place to start for some information on the horses bloodlines. I would consider myself a quarter horse geek, specifically the foundation bloodlines.

You need the original papers to transfer - not a copy. AQHA will not transfer with a copy of the papers. Also, you are charged for a one year membership in order to register a horse in your name.

Bad choice of words, I didn’t mean a copy of them. I meant the papers themselves. And I have been an AQHA for the better part of 10 years now, I didn’t know for sure that you had actually become a member to register a horse. I thought there was a non-member fee and they would transfer it.

The “non-member” fee is a one year membership plus whatever you are doing (registration, transfer, etc)
