Thanks for sharing the pictures of your lovely cull. Those are pretty impressive earnings for such a sub par horse.
Exactly.
Guys. A reining “cull” or a reining “step down” says nothing about them being sub par in ranch.
It apparently hurt some feelings though, so I’m sorry for that.
Remember that every single OTTB is a “cull” or a “step down”. It might not make you feel warm and fuzzy, but that is what they are. I own one.
Reeelaxxxxx.
You calling ranch horses, anything that jumps below 3 feet, and anything off the track a “cull” is an insult. It implies that they are so bad at doing the job they were intended for that they were “culled” out of that sport to an easier yet inferior sport, apparently just so their owner can get a ribbon. It’s really insulting for people who were never interested in racing their OTTB, or reining their QH, or jumping higher than 3 feet. In addition the ranch horse market is not full of cheap has been reiners.
Again, you are missing the point. The reiners, cowhorse and some WP bred horses go into ranch because there is a huge competitive market. I have a friend that only shows in AQHA ranch riding. She does at a national level. She buys reiners mostly. She does not want a subpar reiner. She pays big money for a nice reining horse. Why? They are broke, they can do the maneuvers and move nicely. Why would you buy a failed one when the patterns still have stops, backups and spins. No, maybe not as fast as NRHA but you still want it to be nice and correct. When she sells them, she markets them as ranch or reiner.
Have you priced a ranch rider? A competitive ranch rider will be in the $40,000 for a lower level to $65,000+. I assure you that these horses can step back into the reining/ranch pen.
What I think is stepping on toes is that you are unfamiliar with this market and keep trying to tell us how it is. Several of us are very familiar with the industry and actually know what we are talking about.
You’re being obtuse. Perhaps you’re doing it deliberately as a form of trolling. Perhaps it’s not deliberate and you truly don’t understand the meaning and emotional tone of the word cull.
The dictionary definition of cull is “something rejected especially as being inferior or worthless.” Even the racehorse trainer who sends an unsuccessful 2 year old home doesn’t consider the horse to be inferior or worthless. The hunter trainer who decides a horse will never be successful at the 3’6" level and instead aims the horse at the 2’6" market doesn’t consider the horse to be inferior or worthless. Cull is not the proper word for those horses. They are not inferior or worthless, they’re just better suited for other jobs.
This is a great post. Thank you!!!
I would be happy to sit on any of these ranch horses. They sound absolutely wonderful.
They are a ton of fun!
Slightly off-topic but also not… At this year’s AQHA World Show, The Immortal was Res. Champ in the Ranch Riding and I believe top 3 or 4 in Ranch Trail. He’s had a ton of success in WP, regular Trail, etc. already so it was a pretty cool crossover. Even more so because he’s an actively breeding 17 year old stallion!
Damn those WP culls showing in Ranch classes.
He is a lovely bred horse, great to see him still going at 17!
My purpose-bred Ranch horse is not at all amused by being called a “cull”
If you’re (g) ignorant of a discipline, it really is best not to express strong opinions about it.
What a lovely horse!
Thank you! Sydney (TCR Accidentaly Dunit) is my princess and the love of my life. She may be the most talented Half Arab ranch/cow horse ever, but she’s stuck with me. Lol.
Is this in Harriman? We may know each other
You’ll just have to ship that reject to me so I can properly dispose of it
AND shes part Arab? Now you definitely need to send to me to dispose of! haha
Yes, that second photo was taken in Harriman!
