My horse is going for a month of Aquatred in July. Obviously he will be spending a lot more time with wet feet than normal. I currently put Keratex Hoof Gel on weekly and in June will be able to do it daily. Are there any other suggestions for decreasing the chance of soft, falling apart feet from all the water? He will be going with a bottle of the gel plus a bottle of a sole toughner provided by his vet. He is barefoot, is on an excellent nutritional program and has good feet. Just being proactive.
We had a horse in rehab in the local place with one of those for two months and he didn’t have any problem with his feet at all from the little time every so many days a week in there?
Ours was barefoot also (had a hock injury, another horse kicked him) and surgery he was rehabbing from.
Horses are not in the water that long or that often for their feet to be affected.
If they are, I would question the overall management, not the water time, or something else going on with the feet.
Normal hoof management should handle that fine.
Once the horse comes out of the aquatred he/she will be washed, dried, then have his feet dressed. the farm where I was used Farrier’s Barrier instead of Keratex. We never had any problems with softness and actually, I think the chlorine in the water may have helped keep things fungus free and dry.
This was my experience when my horse was on rehab at a place with aquatred as part of his therapy. I don’t remember if they used Keratex or another product, but it was something like that. He was barefoot and had no problem at all.
