Aqueduct considering surface . . .

change to synthetic. Interesting that the primary reason is not safety. Want to attract race horses with different apitudes. Opinions in NY split on the idea.

I don’t see it will make much difference but a lot of money to spend on an idea that will attract horses that don’t succeed or prefer anything but the industry standard of dirt.

Since they’re just considering the artificial turf for one of the tracks, that sounds like it might attract more horses, which is always good for a track. And it’s the inner track, so what would they be? Short races? I guess anything goes these days, within reason, to attract more runners and keep your track open.

With Aqueduct’s set up, I think it would be a great idea. Having three racing surfaces also might keep Aqueduct viable for the future. I’ve always wondered how long NYRA is going to keep maintaining two aging thoroughbred facilities within a stone’s throw of one another. Despite having more versatile facilities, Aqueduct doesn’t have Belmont’s reputation (thanks to its marquee race) and has dodged closure before as a result.
