When I showed in the 80’s they were not? I was watching the live feed from Colorado, and a horse was wearing either full or 3/4 cups. Hard to tell as they were black.
Are tongue ties now allowed?
I know tongue ties aren’t allowed in FEI classes.
Here is part of the FEI 2016 Jumper rule:
ARTICLE 257 SADDLERY
In the Competition arena
1.1.
Blinkers are forbidden.
1.2
Leather, sheepskin or similar material may be used on each cheek piece of the bridle providing the material does not exceed three centimetres in diameter measured from the Horse’s cheek.
1.3.
Only unrestricted running martingales are allowed. Standing martingales are permitted for Horses in Children’s Competitions.
1.4.
There are no restrictions on bits. However, the Ground Jury has the right, based on veterinary advice, to forbid the use of a bit that may cause injury to the Horse. Reins must be attached to the bit(s) or directly to the bridle. Gags and hackamores are allowed.
1.5.
The use of a tongue-strap is forbidden. For the use of tongue guards, see VRs Art.1035.4
Relevant part of FEI 2016 Veterinary Rule 1035:
Article 1035
Bandages and Tack
- In addition to these VRs, the prohibitions and requirements regarding specific types of tack are also regulated according to the various Sport Rules.
- Mouth guards which cover teeth are prohibited at any time during the Period of the Event.
- Throat support devices such as Cornell collars are allowed; provided a written statement from a veterinary surgeon certifying that the Horse requires such a device for welfare reasons is received by the FEI Veterinary Department, at least 4 weeks before first use at an Event. A copy of the statement must be retained at all times for inspection during an Event.
- Tongue guards are only permitted if used correctly; separate items must not be incorporated around the bit so as to cause welfare concerns.
- The use of tongue ties is prohibited.
Perhaps the USEF Rules are different. In fact, I could not find a mention of either in their Jumper Division Rules. Nor do they have an entry in the Rule Book Index.
Blinkers used to be allowed as I knew someone who used one, so I suspect they still are but am not positive. No idea about tongue ties. FEI rules are much more stringent.
Used them at USEF competitions. Have not been told to remove either. Were not FEI classes. Did have to cut sheepskin on cheekpieces once
In Canada I believe blinkers and tongue ties are not allowed and I’ve seen stewards check horses mouths if they suspect something is not right!
