Hope I didn’t screw up too much by spraying waterproofing agent on a Schneider’s sheet. Brand new sheet. My first of this type of Schneider’s blankets. Decided to spray it since it was new, didn’t want it to get dirty only to later find out it wasn’t completely waterproof and needed spraying. Horse ran around, got a bit steamy under the sheet. First thought was, oh no, it’s no longer breathable. The horse’s in Rambo’s with attached neck seemed less steamy. Is this just the attached neck design causing some heat retention or did I just render my sheet unbreathable by applying waterproofing agent? The horse dried off, stood out in pouring rain and was 100% dry underneath.
I’ve been spraying mine after cleaning each year and haven’t had a problem. I don’t treat them when they’re new though. I’d guess the horse was just overdressed for the temp and his activity level. What kind of spray did you use?
I find attached necks retain a lot of extra heat.
I used some industrial quality waterproofing agent. Not sure of brand right this moment.
The Rambo’s received the same waterproofing treatment. This was my first time WP’ing blankets. Figured they were all clean, so why not? All the horses that day had turnouts with necks on. All ran about at the same time and all got warm. It was the horses in the Schneiders that were warmer and had condensation on the inside of the turnout.
Thinking it was just sweat and not condensation.
I think this falls into the category of no two horses react the same to the same thing. I would guess your turn out is still breathable. The horses in the one type of blanket got a little warmer for whatever reason.
Thanks, all. The product is used on boat covers, awnings. It also has stain and dirt repelling properties, repels oil based stains like animal droppings, and says it does not restrict fabric breathability.
I think I’m having the same issue! I bought a Dura-Tech Viking turnout sheet, but the tag says SSTack, which I think is Schneider’s. I’ve used what I thought was a similar sheet for years on my old gelding with no problems. I bought this Schneider’s one for my new mare and did not treat it or do anything to it. When she wears it, it always is wet on the inside.
Dura-Tech is a Schneider’s brand (SSTack) blanket.
I talked to Schneider’s customer service, and they said this condensation issue has been reported before on this sheet.
