Are there any brands that sell alfalfa pellets in smaller bags?

Kind of an odd question but are there any brands that sell bags of alfalfa pellets that aren’t 40-50lbs? I don’t go through them very fast so I’d like to find maybe a 20 or 25lb bag if that’s even possible. I end up with the issue of them going bad because they get used so slowly.

You can get small bags at Chewy.com, TSC, and other pet/farm stores that are packaged for rabbits (make sure you’re getting pure alfalfa, not rabbit feed formulations!) but it tends to be ridiculously expensive. I think I’ve seen it on ebay, too, where enterprising people buy large bags and put it into smaller packages for resale, though I wouldn’t buy animal feed on ebay. (Though maybe selling your excess on ebay might be an idea for you?)

personally I would ask my feed store (which is Not a national chain but a local chain) to rebag the product that I like into two bags… they have the equipment to seal a bag, at least the two stores that I use have, and either would bend over backwards to offer the service… expect to either pay or tip them for doing so.

(sometimes they Do have ripped bags so maybe already have something opened)

actually called the store manager, she said Sure they would

Get an airtight container for your pellets and they should last for a long time. Don’t leave them in the bag.

Thanks everyone!

I’m curious what the environment is that 50lb of alf pellets is going bad? Stored cool and dry, they should last a pretty long time

My mistake is that they weren’t sealed so I freaked out, got paranoid, & stopped using them. I still have them but it’s been quite awhile so I think they probably expired, I’m not sure of an actual expiration date though. It takes a really long time for me to use a 50lb bag since they’re really used during training & only for one horse. Kept in an uninsulated feed room outside, next time I think I’ll just get a 50lb bag & store in my house with airtight container.

alfalfa pellets don’t really “expire”. They are dehydrated alfalfa. They might have a “best by” date, but as long as they are kept dry, they last quite a long time, theoretically a few years.

But yes, a feed room outside, unless you’re in the desert, has probably experienced enough humidity that some of them at the bottom could have gotten a bit moldy.

It’s less about airtight, and more about the humidity of where they are kept

I use kitty litter buckets to store them. No issue with them going nasty at all. If you don’t use kitty litter, you should be able to get screw on lids for 5 gallon buckets from Tractor Supply (Peavey Mart now in Canada.) Either will work - both are designed to keep stuff stored in them dry. 2 buckets should hold 50lbs of pellets.

If you get a bucket with a lid then you can just fill that and leave it at the barn and keep the rest of the bag at home where the climate inside is more stable. Just tape the bag closed.
