I am planning to breed my mare this upcoming season. She is from the Mr. Prospector line. I am looking at a Tapit stallion and I’m wondering if there are any physical problems or weaknesses that are known to come from that line.
What, specifically, is the pedigree of your Mare and the stud you are looking at, top and bottom on both?
The mare is by Allen’s Prospect, out of Capotes Blessing (Capote). Stallion is y Tapit out of Midday Runner (Real Quiet)
Unfortunately, Tapits are notoriously fractious and difficult to train, whether for the track or afterward.
Attitude are their worst trait but I don’t think all of them are that way.
To be honest I’d look at Tapit’s brother who is standing in WV for a VERY affordable price. On top of that, I think he is more of a looker than Tapit himself, more bone, lots of chrome HIs name is ALDRIN and he is standing at O’sullivan Farms in WV for a very affordable $4000. See him here or on their website:

Really like the lines on your mare. Dam’s dam is by Capote out of a Danzig x Bold Bidder x Hill Prince mare. and Allen’s Prospect had a chest a mile wide and was by Mr Prospector out of a Swaps x War Admiral mare. Such old lines so close.
Are you looking at breeding to the horse Pallasus by Tapit and out of MIdday Runner (Real Quiet x Wanted Again)??
If so, he only ran once at Belmont for W. Mott and finished 9/10 so I am assuming he was injured in his 1st start? Couldn’t find him anywhere via google search though.
If this is the stallion you are considering, I think there are better Tapit sons out there who are more affordable with much better results on the track. If you are local to any of them; take a drive and see them in person. Tapit sons are becoming numerous so they are going to water each other down in the coming years. I think you would be better off finding a Tapit son who has the race record and pedigree to back up his offspring. even if this meant shipping your mare to be bred; its worth the investment!

NORMANDY INVASION: Standing in NY for $3500. Tapit x Boston Harbor. $551,000 in earnings. Graded stakes placed.
TAPRIZE: Standing in Indiana for $2500.; Another beautiful conformed Tapit Son who I think is underrated in the sea of sons. Tapit x Fun House (PRIZED). not much of a race record from him though

TIDAL VOLUME. Standing in Ohio for $3000. Tapit x Honour and Glory. $231,000 in career earnings. Stakes winner.

I personally have never been a fan of Tapit, despite the success of his offspring because of his conformation, mostly his hind end. I’ve always thought he stamps the majority of his offspring with the same conformation traits that I dislike about him. They obviously can still run, and top breeders aren’t shying away from him.
Allens Prospect, I don’t know him but he has some nice looking offspring, good luck with your mare!
I saw the most lovely Tapit x Tiznow colt’s sale video recently. I thought he looked lovely for sport and had a calm disposition given the commotion. But he sold for 1.25 million so I guess he’ll be out of the price range!

I think there are much better options out there than the sire you are looking at. He raced once and finished 9/10 under B. Mott and never raced again. I think you can find a very affordable Tapit son with a great pedigree and race record behind them to back up their offspring. There are a lot of Tapit sons available and a lot more on the way; they will water down the market soon enough. For me, if youre going to breed; breed to something that will help their offspring in the long run. If you are planning to race yourself or sell as a weanling/yearling you need a Tapit son who is going to help market what you bred
Downfall of Tapits: they can be hard headed and difficult. Not all, but many. If you are within driving distance of any of the stallions I list below; go meet them. You wont regret it
I think your mare is very neat. successful mare, lots of very old blood that is up close in her pedigree. Allens Prospect had a chest a mile wide on him. I think Tapit lines could work well on her, but find something affordable that has it going for them; not just a 1 race failure who happens to be by a big name sire.
Tapit’s brother by Malibu Moon is standing in WV at O’sullivan for a very affordable price. I like him a bit better than Tapit. Chrome, bone quality, etc. He is new to the stallion line up and his race record isn’t as good as some Tapit sons but it might be worth looking into as a second option. His name is ALRDIN

I know you didn’t ask for it but I think its worth looking into; here are some affordable TAPIT sons that I think are worth looking into; even if you had to ship your mare to the stallion; I think it is honestly worth it in the long run
BANDBOX: Standing in MD for $2500. Winner of $390,000 Tapit x Grand Slam x Deputy Minister. Stakes winner and graded stakes placed.

TAPITURE; standing in KY for $7500. While his stud fee is a bit more I think hes worth it. You get out what you are willing to put in. His 2017 weanlings sold for big money ($300k, 150k) and if youre mare is as successful on the track as I think she was; no brainer. Winner of 1.5 million

DIVINING ROD: Standing at Country Life in MD 2018. $5000. He is stunning. TAPIT x CATIENUS. They just announced this so might be worth contacting them

Wow! Lots of info there. Thank you all so much. The stallion I am looking at is Tapin Mojo. He has a decent racing record and I have visited him in person. He has the temperment of a puppy dog and lots of bone. And he’s local. And his owner likes the match too. my next choice would be Honorable Dillon but I have seen both and like Mojo better.
Tapits lack brains. I’m pretty sure Allens Prospect has been dead for like 15 years.
Sorry I was having COTH problems yesterday and my posts were not posting. so I posted it x2. Crazy computer.
For the $500 stud fee on Tapin Mojo; might be worth it since its not a huge investment and if his temperament is good, even better
I did find some photos of him, he is quite the lovely type. Are there any formal confirmation photos of him anywhere?
Best of luck
To the posters that say Tapit’s offspring have a reputation for being difficult or lack brains? Where does that come from? There is nothing on his page that I equate with difficult/intractable except possibly Fappiano but he is so far back?
I’m not a fan of the hind end that seems to be on some Tapit offspring. He seems to really pass on the HQ. It apparently is not holding him or his offspring back though…
I have a friend with a Tapit son who is very easy to work with. She took him to the RRP last year or the year before and did very well in dressage.
For what it’s worth, I’ve never worked with any Tapit offspring directly other than her horse, but I absolutely love his sire Pulpit…and AP Indy. I really like the Corinthian, Sky Mesa and Ice Box OTTBs I’ve seen. ’
OP, are you trying to breed for a race horse… or a sport horse? What is your motive here?
LANI is Tapits most notorious problem son. he is downright nasty. Perhaps their temperaments change when they are off the track, different diets, more turnout, etc. but on the track they are notoriously difficult. DRF even posted an article on how handling Tapit’s progeny is “No easy task”.
FWIW, when I visited Claiborne Farm several years ago, Pulpit was one of the stallions that they brought out of the barn for visitors to pet and take pictures with him. So I don’t think Tapit’s difficult nature came from Pulpit…unless maybe Pulpit was difficult when he was younger and he mellowed with age? The day I saw him, he was calm, patient, and agreeable.
I am looking to breed for racing but with consideration for a second career, so temperment is important to me. I don’t think there are many photos of him. I know him personally and his owner, so I was interested before they even offered him at stud. I was concerned about physical traits because the dams previous offspring has shown a possible weakness in the sesamoid area. Nothing concrete, just something to consider. It is an area I would feel good about strengthening (who wouldn’t) Mojo seems to have really good bone, I only wondered if there was any anecdotal info out there.
Check out Perfect Soul at Claiborne if you are looking for racing and second career. Might work out very well for you
Have to agree with that – I met Pulpit in 2004 and have a daughter. Both delightful. I think your mare and the prospective sire look like a good match on paper. Lots to like in both pedigrees. Best of luck!
@Lmurf How do you see a possible weakness in the sesamoid area that would genetically pass to offspring, without an xray machine? Or did you actually look at xrays of several of the dams offspring?
OP, if you are interested in Perfect Soul, you would have more luck looking for him at Darby Dan.
