Arena Footing Survey, Senior Project! Cazenovia College

Post Removed due to complaints. Thanks to everyone who helped despite our errors.

I’d love to help, but I’m getting a 404 when I go there! Anyone else?

same here

Not working for me either :frowning:

As a Caz graduate, it breaks my heart to see this kind of writing from a senior.

Here is the correct URL for some reason when I posted the link it changed it around, it wasn’t working on another page either, I am sorry about the mistake. I am also sorry for the grammar earlier, I had just gotten back from class and was in a rush to get to work, I did realize it was wrong but I never have been great with writing.

I’ve been trying to refrain from comment… but wait until you read the survey.

I took it. But… almost stopped several times for questions which didn’t really resemble English, and left me guessing how to answer.

Sorry that you had trouble understanding questions, they go through a review board at the college that we have to be approved through 2 professors as well as the IRB committee, and its a group project so I am tired of all the blame being placed on me. You didn’t have to take it. I am in no way claiming to be an english major or even great with english, since I am not perfect and don’t try to be I can accept my flaws. But out of courtesy for myself as well as Jo please stop, it takes the fun out of our learning experience. I have read previous capstone that should not have passed at all based on errors alone.

I would like to know what my religion has to do with
my choice of footing? It would not let me continue
unless I chose something. I decided it was none of
your business so I chose ‘other’. Really, is there some
religion that prohibits killing of trees to make sawdust
or something?? I am guessing if it was the case, there
might also be a proscription against riding horses, too.

I see it far more as a failure of the professors than the students. The problem is, many of these questions could be taken multiple ways. Are you asking for our highest preference to be 1 or 6? Are you asking if we agree a quotation was made (as the question is written) or actually if we agree with the sentiment in the quotation (as I assumed you meant)? Professors who are having students conduct research through questionnaires should ensure the students understand how to write one which is going to result in the takers actually responding to the question as intended. That’s the whole point of having external reviewers, as things are always clear to the writer - you know exactly what you meant!
Even professional surveys tend to be somewhat flawed, but a professor should have taught better here and done a better job reviewing, to ensure that at least respondents are answering the same questions. You already have enough variation just from people who don’t read directions and just pick answers at random.

Agree with this! The survey was difficult to read and really understand what the questions were asking. Especially the quote section. I think questions more specific to types of footing and experiences on that footing would have been more interesting… Or what type of footing caused you to move your horse from a barn (my case), etc.

I applaud the effort by the students but shame on the professors and college staff for not providing a better writing education. As a teacher I see this is a huge hole in many of my own student’s education.

Off soapbox…

Becky

This is the part my partner did and I wish I could just take it down and post up a new one… because i’m not sure the results even matter at this point. As for our writing department we seem to be pointed towards tutors to correct stuff, and online work cited things. so we really don’t know our errors unless its basic things we learned previously, and yes it was agreeing with the quotation out of the statement, and 1 being most important as if you were awarding them ribbons. She thought that was common sense however I would agree that the average questionnaire is rated the other way 1 being the least… at this point I would love for help with writing this paper when we work on the next section…and thank you for correcting the statement it had me actually really stressed out last night.

as for the religion its a required question, other is perfectly acceptable thats why we put it there. Our professor required the basic demographic type questions. outside of potentially income and gender most wont be used except horse related ones.

I am saddened to see that colleges, high schools, and middle schools are not treating writing as an essential skill. It doesn’t matter what one’s major is, if one can not convey information in a comprehensible manner, they are at a distinct disadvantage.

Proper grammar isn’t just about style, it is about clear communication. Writing is like riding, clear, precise and polished aids clearly communicate our requests to the horse. Sloppy riding results in a confused horse and a run-on sentence results in a confused reader.

Like my riding, my grammar and spelling are far from perfect, but I do strive to express myself clearly.

well I do try and improve all the time, the problem is especially on things like this I can re-read several times and still understand and I think part of it is that I read over errors and I read it correctly. Thanks for putting it like that though, I don’t think anyone has put it like that.

Well here’s the reality check. When these students graduate they probably won’t be hired. I appears that foreign students who have learned English as a second language have better spoken and written English.
This young gal seems to feel it’s something she “just accepts” and doesn’t have to bother correcting. If a writer has more than 3 commas in a sentence - it’s a run-on sentence and should be broken down into individual sentences.

As far as how surveys are done. Having been a Financial Analyst for my career it’s EXTREMELY important to make sure a survey is clear on what is high score and what is low score. ASSUME NOTHING. And if the questions are ambiguous your responses won’t be what is referred to as a “realiable random sample” and not data that you can rely on for conclusions.

I personally cringe when I hear young people speak and write. It’s so frightening that we spend more per student than other industrialized countries and our schools at all levels are NOT teaching the basics. Reading, Writing and Math.

AND PLEASE NOTE IN PARAGRAPH 2 OF YOUR COVER LETTER - IT’S “ASSESS” NOT “ASSES”.!!!

And what is this comment - “taking the FUN out of our learning experience”? It’s your education which should provide you with future employment!

i bailed half way through because the survey is too long and boring

the cover letter on this we didn’t even write, its a pre-made document and all we insert is our names and the topic of the study we are doing. It isn’t that I accepted it, I’ve never had anyone take the time to break anything down. My elementary school never taught the foundations of english so in 8th grade when they decided they probably should it made it difficult, and still struggle with it. I go to the tutors and work with my english professors, and still have a great GPA. As for your assumptions on us not receiving jobs based on that, you are very mistaken, considering my entire senior class including myself already have jobs lined up at places such as proctor and gamble and with large trainers. It has always been the case the foreigners speak a lot better than Americans in general because they start english as a requirement in Kindergarten here its an option and oh yeah we are forced to take english french and latin before learning our own language properly first. I’m done with this discussion at this point since there is nothing I can say or do to make you people happy. I cant go in and edit after it has been posted. It is the nature of this project, I pulled several today to see if maybe we really just did a shitty job, and back into the 90s they haven’t been “top quality” work because we are taking 24 credits a semester plus our jobs in order to finish on time.
