Arena Lights

Hi all

I am putting up a new indoor arena, the crew is starting this week. I have a local electrician contracted for doing my lights. But he has never done an indoor arena before. I am wondering if anyone can give me suggestions for how many light I may need? It is a pole shed uninsulated, with 2 ft of wall light panel at the top of the walls. 72 x 180. I am using what I call a UFO light. Thanks in advance

What’s the ceiling height? That’s one of the most important factors?

Sorry, 16 ft @Horsehusband

My arena is 160 by 80 with 18 ft ceilings. We have 3 rows of 10 lights.

We are also using the 200 Watt UFO lights. I wish I would have gone with the 250 watt lights.

@Horsehusband so 30 lights in total?

From my experience, come up with your best plan and then triple the number of lights. Then have three separate circuits and switches. You can always turn off a bank of lights, but you can’t just magically add one later without significant cost.

Yes - 30 total. You have lower wattage so might need more.

These are the lights I have

Upgrade 200W High Bay LED Shop Light 30000lm (Eqv.800W MH/HPS) UFO High Bay Lighting, ETL UFO Lights AC100-277V High Bay LED Light with Plug-6Pack - Amazon.com

We have a 72x160 indoor and have 21 high bay lights. I believe they are 30000 lumens. They are a vast improvement on the old halogen lights that were up when we bought the place. I wouldn’t go any dimmer.

Thanks, we are actually getting 240 watt, 34000 lumen lights. I just used those lights for reference of the style. If I get 30 on two different banks should be good.

I got cold ballast fluorescent 20yrs ago because I hated the buzzing from halide.
My Bad was to not enclose fixtures. In very cold or humid weather, they’re slow to go on.
At 16’ you won’t see me replacing any that burn out, so far all good. But they’re hardly ever used.
Even at night, I’ll generally use just the center bank. In daylight they all stay off.
For my 60X120 I overrode electrician’s plan, cutting down the number & settled on 3 banks of 5, running lengthwise.
When they’re all on you could perform surgery in there! :grimacing:

@LCDR is spot-on about separate switches.

I’d love to switch to LED & those High Bay look great.
First, I need to win a lottery

I put up lights in my arena (18 ft ceiling - 72x144 and 3 rows of 8) a few years ago and based on posts here felt what was recommended was too many. I regret that and have slight shadows. We also put in dimmers which are handy.

Also be careful if you have garage doors for ends that you don’t put the lights there. Another mistake made. :see_no_evil:

I bought from ProLighting and happy w the lights just wish I had put in what they recommended.

@PaddockWood Thanks, I can’t tell in the pictures what kind of light did you go with?
