Arena question; poles for lighting

I am building an arena, and about to have the holes dug for the arena fencing. The arena fencing posts will be 4x4’s and the holes are being professionally dug.

It occurred to me that perhaps I should think about arena lighting now, and use some of the holes for tall posts that will hold lights eventually. Wood posts I suppose, since the arena fencing is going to be wood.

With the new LED lighting, I wonder if some of the old advice is obsolete (I did a search and old Chronicle discussions came up).

Anyone got advice on how high for poles? What material for poles? How many for 220 x 215 arena?

Thank you!

We have 20’ 6X6s and metal halide bulbs. I haven’t gotten around to swapping out for LEDs, I use them very little so the power bill isn’t outrageous.

We are in the same situation. This can get really expensive really quick. Do a google search of companies that sell lighting for baseball fields etc. Send them you dimensions and they will do a schematic of right lighting strategy along with light post height. Our budget for a 230 x 100 arena came in at $8k. Consequently we are giving everyone the LED light that you wear as a headband and let them use that for night time riding.

This is a neat site. Mind your wallet, though, 200X215 is going to be pricey…
